Speech therapy for a 9mth old
We had our friends over yesterday and they were telling me that there pediatrician referred their 9 month old daughter for speech therapy because she wasn't saying anything yet. I thought it was odd that a pediatrician would do that so early. She seems to be on target otherwise. Thoughts?

I've never heard of speech therapy for a 9 month old.
Maybe she isn't even babbling?

Re: Speech therapy for a 9mth old
Hmm, I seriously doubt they will actually receive services though (unless they want to pay for them) since 9 month olds aren't "supposed" to talk.

Well for the few hours I saw her yesterday I didn't catch her babbling but that's mainly because she was busy chewing her fingers since she's teething. I did hear her giggling a few times though.

Never heard of that! Like someone said maybe if the child isn't babbling at all, but my niece's dr wouldn't even recommend evaluation until she was 2.

Maybe the ped saw evidence of an oral-motor problem beyond just lack of babbling... feeding issues, drooling issues, mouth posture etc.

Re: Speech therapy for a 9mth old
Is the baby showing signs of any other type of disability? Down Syndrome, CP, feeding problems, etc? I have seen babies that young getting services, but usually when something else is going on.

I would tend to think those would be reasons for referrals at that age. I have referred kids for evaluations in either speech or OT for oral motor issues.

I'm a speech therapist... 9 month olds aren't supposed to be talking yet BUT, i'm sure their ped had a reason for referring. maybe she isn't babbling like she should be at that age, or like someone else said maybe he sees signs of an oral motor or feeding issue...

My eldest DD started speech at 2 1/2 months old...But she has other issues going on. Like the PP said there is probably something else going on.

Re: Speech therapy for a 9mth old
That seems a little early. I had someone evaluate my dd at age 2 and said if she is still not talking like she should at 2 1/2 to get help. At 2 1/2 she started and 7 years later she has NOT stopped-LITERALLY!!!

Thats what I was going to say.... usually the biggest issue at this age is feeding issues, and any oral motor issues that are precursors for speaking...
