Morning Work Out - Eat?

Those that wake up and immediately work out, do you eat something before your workout? Eat something immediately after?

I see all the eat x before you work out, eat y immediately after advice, but I don't know if it's something I actually need to do. I'm not trying to bulk up or anything, but I'd hope to add some lean muscle with my workouts, so do I need to eat?

For the past week, I've been waking up early to work out. I get up, get dressed, and work out with water. Then after, I drink my coffee and get the kids up. I don't eat until I get to work. Is that ok?

over the years, i've done it ALL. eat before, eat after, eat this but not that, etc.
nothing has ever made a difference. unless you're training at olympic levels or working to reduce all your body fat for a bodybuilding contest then it really doesn't matter... unless you're diabetic.

i do exactly what you describe you do...
* water when i wake up and some water during the workout.
* coffee after the workout.
* breakfast when i get hungry (by then i'm at work)
this together with cleaning out my head about why i eat, has been very successful for me.

even when i read Jeff Galloway's book on running, he talked about many people not needing to consume anything before a run... even a long run.

if you're not feeling sick or weak, you're doing just fine.

That's what I thought, but I guess I wanted to make sure. It's so confusing when you see all the articles - eat this, eat that, don't do this, always do that etc. I read one article that both told me you should eat before you work and that you didn't have to eat before you worked out, so I was just left confused.

I'm definitely going to go with if I feel ok, then don't worry about it. I'm really just trying to be a little more fit. No grand goals right now.

Morning Work Out - Eat?

Eat when best works for you. I prefer to do fasted workouts so I do not have food sitting in my stomach when I am working out.

I wake up around 4 am. Workout (run or lift) from 4:25-5:25. Eat around 6:15.

The most important thing for me is to properly hydrate or I get ocular/regular migraines.

I can't eat before I work out. My stomach doesn't tolerate it.

Do what feels best for you - I do the same as you and have for years.

Re: Morning Work Out - Eat?

If I’m just doing cardio, I don’t eat. Just have water. If I’m doing any lifting, I make sure I eat. If I don’t eat, I don’t have the strength to push myself and gas out pretty quickly. Your muscles need fuel.

I can’t eat right before because I will throw up. So I have a packet of plain oatmeal with blueberries and a drizzle
Of honey about 1 hr before. It gives me the energy I need to really push myself. Immediately Afterwords, I drink a protein shake (I bring it with me to the gym
And drink it in the car on the way home)
