Morphology vs. Abnormal Morphology... and other questions!
Is there a difference?
I am confused about these two terms.
On our results sheet for DH's SA, it says:
Abnorm Morphology: 4% [Reference Range = 0-10]
Our RE said he likes to see 14%.
I'm just confused! When we first saw the SA, we didn't think morphology was an issue since it was in the reference range - but can someone explain what these numbers mean?
Thank you!
Our RE said he'd consider us "slighltly MF." but really unexplained. (HSG = normal, CD 3 b/w = normal, but elevated AMH meaning high ovarian reserves, normal ovulation on my own)
Also - we are doing injectables with IUI. Will this help? How many cycles would you do before moving onto IVF?
Thank you!

Re: Morphology vs. Abnormal Morphology... and other questions!
That morph is very low. My Dh;s is also 4% and we have MF. He saw a Male infertility urologist to rule out anything controllable. We still did IUI's though.
I think the 0-10 range is for the low? I dont know actually but I have heard 14 or better is best.
Wait? does it mean 4% are abnormal?
Im confused? My dh has 4% normal.

Re: Morphology vs. Abnormal Morphology... and other questions!
Hmm, I know on our SA's it says Morphology & not Abnormal...If I was reading it with the abnormal, I would think it would be 4% abnormal & 96% good.
In any case, we are MF IF & DH has a morphology of 2%. He too went to a fertility urologist to rule out anything we could. We did discover he had low testosterone, so he is on Clomid.
We did 2 IUI's with me on Clomid & they didn't take. Our RE told us IVF is the best thing for us bc they can bypass the MF with ICSI. So we are moved forward this cycle.

Blog Article
I remember searching for info when DH's SA showed 4% morphology. This article/blog came up and it was the most practical information I found about the issue.

Re: Morphology vs. Abnormal Morphology... and other questions!
It made me feel a lot better reading it! I'm sick of searching for info and having the same generic, textbook information come up. I liked that this guy is a doctor and pretty much spoke from experience and said the average was 4-6% and gave a practical, common sense reason for it.

Thanks for the article.
I'm still not really understanding though what is meant by 4% abormal morphology. In my mind, I felt like that would mean 96% were normal! But I guess not

You wont know I dont think...so I would ask. Call and ask a nurse or to have the Dr. Call you back so you know for sure
