Mothers of babies that just turned one...
Ryan's dr wants him to get his blood checked(just routine). I hate getting mine done and I could only imagine how he will feel.
Is it reallly necessary?

I know it totally sucks- but I really felt like it was a necessary evil. I also lived in an area with high levels of lead.

DS has his one year checkup May 11th, and he is getting blood work done. I hate the thought of him getting it, but I will feel better knowing he has been checked for anything in his blood.

DS just had his one year checkup on Friday. He had his bloodwork done at 10 months though. It's better to know if there are any problems than not know at all!

Re: Mothers of babies that just turned one...
we just got my son's done last weekend, it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. it wasn't a finger prick, they had to go in a vein in the arm-we must have gotten a really great tech. though b/c she did it in one shot-less than a minute. it did take me and my husband both to hold my son down, he was more upset about being held down than having the blood drawn. that didn't bother him in the least. i was a nervous wreck going in and it was over in no time at all!

DS had his done at 10 months as well. It wasn't fun but I didn't think not to have it done. The nurse did it right before the visit with the dr. and the dr. had the results by the time she came in to give him his checkup. They used his toe.

DD had it done and it was a finger prick but they had to squeeze a bunch to fill a small vial. She did great and didn't even cry. IMO, it is not something to skip. The little pain they may experience is worth the information you could gain if something is not right. HTH!

Re: Mothers of babies that just turned one...
we just got Landon's done last week at 10.5 months. The dr. also ordered a couple of extra tests for him because of his chronic diarrhea... it was about 6 vials of blood he screamed the whole time and I had to hold him down. It was rough but when it was over he was back to his normal self.

Why do they do this if there isn't anything wrong with your child? Not being difficult, just wondering.

Re: Mothers of babies that just turned one...
I would do it. Some kids have trouble with the blood test, others do not. Not only do they test for lead, they test for anemia and I believe there is a basic CBC test, like the one done with you. If something is off, your child might not show symptoms right away.
DS had it done twice, at 12 months and again at 15 because something was a bit off in the 12 month check. Both times he was fine--he was flirting with the lab tech and interested in the tube contraption they use to transport the blood.
DC might not like it, but I think it's one of those things that should be done (IMO) like putting your child in a carseat, etc.

Re: Mothers of babies that just turned one...
I just did it recently. I felt awlful doing it but knew it was the right thing. The lady that took her blood was very quick. She cried a bit more and longer then a shot but forgot about it right away.
