Motorcycle etiquette question....

I know we have a few motorcycle owners here, so I thought I'd ask this question, although it's twofold and for non-motorcycle riders, as well.
Here's the scenario: You live in a small neighborhood where houses are close together. You have a very loud Harley. You leave it idling in your driveway after midnight every night. Then for good measure, you rev the engine many times only to pull it in your garage. Your neighbors' bedrooms are all facing your garage because you are the corner house and your garage is in back of your house. Acceptable motorcycle etiquette or no? My husband and I are in disagreement over this, so I'm curious to see what everyone has to say. ETA: Do you think there is a time when it would be considered unacceptable to be revving your engine and riding around the neighborhood on said Harley?

I agree.

We once had a neighbor on our block who owned many Harleys & would work on them at the same time. I swear I think that's why the family next door moved.

Summers were a nightmare. He would leave in the wee hours, waking up their kids...and be back in time for tinkering when they were eating dinner & putting the kids to bed.

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

My DH rides. He would never do that. It is unacceptable.

Somewhat related... My parents live on a canal. There is one neighbor who rents out dock space. One boater he always rents to leaves his boat running for about 30 minutes before he leaves at 5Am. He also revs the engines. My mother gets ticked every time.

its rude.

We have a neighbor that lives a few blocks away that has some crazy chopper type bike. He likes to leave really early on Sat & Sun mornings to go riding but instead of puttering out of the neighborhood he acts like a 12 year old boy & flicks the throttle constantly so he can hear his loud bike. I followed him home in the afternoon a few weeks ago, complimented his bike up & down and asked him if there was anyway he could *try* to leave more quietly because most everyone in our neighborhood sleeps with the windows open & its so peaceful here it startles me out of bed & makes my dog bark, I'm thinking its a real problem for people with little ones.
I told him in the afternoon when he comes home people don't mind.
He was pretty nice about it & said he would be more quiet. So far so good, although the weather has been crappy. I'm hoping it workedChat Icon

Try talking to him.

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

It's not just "motorcycle etiquette", it's just loud noise etiquette. There is no reason, motorcycle, hot rod car, radios, shouting, tractors, sheep shearing, etc., to be making loud noises that late.

Riding the bike on the road is different. As long as the bike passes inspection and is legal, you can't tell someone that they can't ride their vehicle home because it's too late. Plus, as long as they aren't driving back and forth on the same section of road, the noise goes away pretty quick. Trucks, and some cars make just as much noise as bikes.

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

i don't understand - if he is going to put the motorcyle in the garage anyway why is he leaving it running in the driveway for so long? that, to me, is rude.

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

I think certain towns/villages/neighborhoods might have local noise ordinances in which after a certain time, there is to be no loud noise. However I am sure someone could get around that by saying it is their means of transportation. It might be worth checking out.

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

Ok, glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's rude. He doesn't really know how to ride it, I've seen him just wobbling down the street, so he just tends to stare at it in the driveway all afternoon, then wait until after midnight to pull it back to the garage, but just revs it and lets it run. It's SO loud and echoes off the houses since we're all so close together. He's also the one that had that really loud party a few weeks ago until all hours of the night. He is definitely not approachable. If anyone remembers, he's the one who killed my other neighbor's cats last year by leaving them bowls of antifreeze to drink. Chat Icon We live in a village with a fairly strict noise ordinance, so before I complain, I just wanted some opinions. My husband doesn't like to make waves, but I feel like we shouldn't have to be woken up after midnight all the time just because he feels the need to prove his manlyhood.Chat Icon

Re: Motorcycle etiquette question....

as a person with biker friends i think it is rude. But in the actual motorcycle culture is perfectly fine in their world. I would be a nice neighbor and drop a note or talk to him and ask if he could kindly walk his bike into the garage if it is late at night. If he is a normal nice guy he will do it if he is a jerk he might do it more often to piss you off but most bikers are nice people so i wouldn't worry unless he wears certain tags on his jacket.

In that case, that's ridiculous. There's no reason he can't pull it in earlier out of consideration for the neighbors.

Honestly, just by what you've said about this guy, IMO you're clearly dealing with a loose cannon. The man KILLED your neighbor's cats!!! That's sick!!

As much as I agree, that what he's doing is wrong, I also agree with your husband that I wouldn't want to make waves with this guy.

If you are going to do anything, I would find out if you can do so annonymously so that he cannot retaliate.

Not a good situation if you ask me... I'm sorry you're stuck dealing with such a head case.
