Moving - Verizon Doesn't Let You Keep Your Number?

Chat Icon I'm moving a few towns over and it's not giving me the option of keeping my current number. I thought you could do that since I will still be using Verizon?

You can keep your number, if you are still in the same exchange. I know my brother did when he moved from Rockville Centre to Oceanside (on the RVC border). Maybe you are in a different exchange??

I'm going from Selden to Pt Jeff Sta so I have no idea if it's the same exchange. I'm annoyed though, but I'll call them on Monday. If I can't keep my number, then I guess I'll just port it out to Opt. Voice and they will lose me as a customer.

You may be able to keep it, but have to pay "mileage" charges because you are moving out of the exchange. Its not like a cell phone where you can keep it no matter where you live.
Honestly, the mileage charges aren't worth it though, it can be pretty expensive.

I had the same issue moving form Amity Harbor to Babylon. The exchange is different so they would not let me keep the number.

If you really want to keep the number, I think you can "bring" it to another company, like Vonage.....Chat Icon

Your new house is in a different Central Office, so they would need to charge you to keep the number because you are moving out of the immediate area.

Exactly - it's based on CO.

I tried that, but I can't take my number with me to the new location with verizon, thus Cable won't be able to transfer the number since it has to be at the location I live at they said. I had Vonage in the past and transferred the number back to Verizon from Vonage, and Vonage was horrible, so I don't want to go that route again. I'm so bummed since I've had the same number for the past 9 years.

Does anyone know if I can take my home number to my cell phone?

Not sure what company you have, but I believe you can do it with verizon wireless. Just call and tell them you want to port your home number to your cell phone.

Re: Moving - Verizon Doesn't Let You Keep Your Number?

Well, I just spoke with AT&T (Cingular)and they can port my number to my cell phone, so that works for me. I already printed my sister's bridal shower invites with my phone number, so I would've hated to have to re-do them all! I'm annoyed though that Verizon doesn't let you take it and they lost a customer, but oh well Chat Icon

We moved 2 towns over twice -- each time we had to change our number. It's the same deal with Cablevision.
