Moving and the STAR Exemption
Hi, we are moving next week and I just have a question on the star exemption. We currently have STAR on our house in the town of Brookhaven. Does anyone know when is the sonest we can apply for STAR on our new house located in the town of Smithtown? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Moving and the STAR Exemption
You can apply now but it won't be go into effect until 2009. In Suffolk you have to apply by March 1st. If the previous owners have it though you should be able to benefit from their star that is what happened to us when we moved last April and this years tax bill still had the old owners on the bill & we got the exemption ours will kick in 2008 tax year.

Re: Moving and the STAR Exemption
Brookhaven's due date was March 1, and I think Smithtown had the same date.
So, since the previous owner's had it, you should already be reaping from it when you get the next tax bill, but you should submit a star application ASAP so it can into effect for 2008.
