Need help moving (NC) (maybe even renting down there at first)
we would like to move into a home by next summer '08.
When should we start looking? Realestate recommendations? Areas?
We are even considering renting first down there, and find the area we like? Anyone have rental recommendations? Average rental prices, etc.

Re: Need help moving (NC) (maybe even renting down there at first)
When it comes to moving OOS, I think it's never too early to start looking at areas, school districts, etc. We knew about 6-8 months ago that we'd be moving to Charlotte this summer, so we started doing research right from the get-go. That was helpful, because when we actually got there to do some house-hunting, we knew which areas were good, and which were not-so-good.
Where in NC are you looking to move? If you're looking at the Charlotte area, I can absolutely recommend our realtor...he was great.
Best of luck! We haven't moved yet, but we DO have our house and we're totally psyched to go!!!

For a 2008 move you can start taking trips down to Charlotte now. Having never lived there, I would suggest renting for a while.
We considered Charlotte, NC and worked with a realtor out there for a bit. We are not leaving NYC just yet though.
We were working with a really wonderful woman, Mignon Valeriano. I know I have her card some place. I will look for it and get her contact info.

Re: Need help moving (NC) (maybe even renting down there at first)
I would LOVE contact information!
We were going to stay in NY until next summer, but then we realized, why rent here, when we can rent there and look for where we want to buy!
Obviously schools are important, and I am a teacher, so even more reason too!
We are open to areas, so the more info the better!
Thank you so VERY much!!!

We are also moving to NC. The building of our house keeps getting delayed so we may change our area BUT we started looking in December for a January 2008 move because we knew we wanted to build. It's never too early to look-good luck!!

NC's a big state. Im in Charlotte and love it (I was nearly dragged down here, now I'll never leave).
All areas have great perks about them, Charlotte worked for DH's and I's careers/industries.
Let me know if I can help.

I have a great real estate agent in the Raleigh area. She is a sweetheart and a vendor on LIF.

We looked in the Raleigh area and Charlotte. We like a development in Rolesville near Wake Forest the best.

Re: Need help moving (NC) (maybe even renting down there at first)
So far we have not decided on an area in particular.
That is why we thought to rent for a little before making the final decision. From what we researched so far we like Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Clayton, High Point, Charlotte.
It's so hard to do though, without making the trip down. That is what we want to plan next.
So the more info the better!

Hang in there, you have to make that initial trip and you will get such a better idea of where you want to live. Give yourself a minimum of 4 days at least!

We did a week trip and split it between Raleigh and Charlotte. We flew into Raleigh and rented a car and drove to Charlotte. You may also want to consider SC on the border of Charlotte. The schools there are very good.

Yikes that might be hard with my DH schedule. We are waiting for his May one to come, so we can see when we can go.

Re: Need help moving (NC) (maybe even renting down there at first)
I moved to Clayton 2 months ago and here's my take on things......
I absolutely LOVE it down here (for instance, it's 85 degrees today!). Clayton is a bit more rural than the other areas you mentioned (which was what we wanted, but it's not for everyone -- for example, we have a brand new house on 2.5 acres, most new developments closer to the Triangle are built on lots that are ALOT smaller.) But again, those subdivisions have a community feel, alot like LI....it all depends on what you want.
Clayton is on the border of Johnston and Wake County and has lower taxes than Wake (where Raleigh, Wake Forest, etc. are located). Schools in Wake County are also alot more crowded....I've heard that more schools are being built statewide to compensate for all the people moving down here.
Any questions, let me know and good luck with your search!

Thank you for sharing! Clayton sounds a little bit more of what we want. We don't want to be on top of out neighbors, so more rural is more for us.

My first time in NC was seriously in the moving truck DH came down for a weekend, said I would like it, that was it. We had no jobs, rented an apartment over the phone.

We went down over a weekend and looked at houses in High point, greensboro, Winston-Salem & Lexington we saw so many houses in that weekend...but ultimately decided on High Point.
