moving cross country with 2 cats!
better to drive or fly? they are a year old now, would be 2 at the time. usually they share one cat carrier (which they love and jump into on their own) but i'm scared of flight delays... and where would they go to the bathroom? but if we drive, it's 16 hours....
anyone ever move with a cat or two? advice?
Edit: I checked one airline's requirements and they have to be in separate carriers and count as carryon, so DH would have to take one and I'd have to take the other if we flew.

Re: moving cross country with 2 cats!
My cats HATE the car and traveling in general. I would recommend talking to your vet - he may be able to give you a mild sedative to help calm them before such a long trip.

If you are driving a truck there is really little space for them in the front (unless you get a 3 passanger front) so take that in mind when doing the move. GL

Re: moving cross country with 2 cats!
DH's aunt drove from texas to missouri with 2 cats, but it was to visit family and not a move. they had a litterbox in the back and let the cats run wild in the car. doesnt sound super safe
one of my good friends said her dad moved from LI to florida with 2 cats, and they flew and the cats were fine. i dont know how they go to the bathroom though!
maybe if you were driving you could get a dog sized carrier and put a litterbox in there too?
neither way sounds great!

Re: moving cross country with 2 cats!
My sister moved to Germany with 2 cats and a puppy. She gave them sedatives b/c it was an 8 hour flight. They did great though. They flew Luftunsa. She was going to fly them PetAir, but their flights were going to be more expensive than hers! I know it was a huge headache for her, but the animals were just happy to see her again when it was all said and done:)
FM if you need any details about the flights.

Re: moving cross country with 2 cats!
When I moved from NY to St. Louis, I had my cat and a fish (yes, I transported the fish). My parents were in the car with me so we left the cat out. He stayed on the back seat the entire time except for when we stopped. We kept his litter box on the floor in the back seat but he never used it.
When I moved from St. Louis to NY, we had 2 dogs and 2 cats. My younger cat flew with DH. We got him a sedative from the vet and he was fine the whole flight. He didn't make a peep. The vet said to make sure not to give him food or water after midnight for the early morning flight. That way he wouldn't have to use the litter box.
I drove with the 2 dogs and the cat. B/c the dogs were with us, the cat stayed in his carrier. I didn't feed him after midnight and he didn't need to use the litter box at all. We drove 9 hours one day and 8 the next. He was fine.
