Mucus in dog poop **Update**
Our dog has had an occasional poop thats covered in a mucus like substance (sorry for the TMI) - we originally assumed it was from something he ate as he occasionally grabs some fallen hibiscus flowers or leaves. But now it seems like its happening even if he hasnt eaten anything but his food/treats.
Does anyone know what this could be from?
**Update**
so the stool was negative for worms - the vet thinks he has Colitis  She gave some meds and he is on a strict diet. She said most likely he will have to follow a very strict diet for life

Short answer.....sounds like worms to me.....
Long answer:
Sounds like your dog has intestinal worms. Usually if the dog has worms the feces will be covered in the sticky mucus type of substance (looks like phlegm). Your vet can take a fecal sample and see what types of worms your dog has.
Some types of digestive disorders can lead to this. For example, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and certain cancers of the colon, etc...; these are all RARE and most likely it is just parasites causing the mucus covered feces.
Even if your dog has been recently wormed it only takes a few weeks for parasites to get back in the dogs system.

Thanks for the response. I have an appt with the vet and of course the stool sample is completly healthy looking - does the mucus have to be there for them to know what it is?

i would bring them a sample anyway... if it is worms they wont be gone with out treatment.... normally a pill or two... so they should still be able to tell.
i bring my cats/dogs in once a year for a check-up... and i always bring a sample with me just to make sure everything is ok.

It could also be from an infection of the anal glands. Can't hurt to check it out with the vet.

he was just there for his annual 2 months ago - and his stool sample was fine - i guess this is something he contracted recently

he had his anal glands expressed maybe about 6-9 months ago - how often is that supposed to be done?

Ollie has mucus in her poop on occasion. The dr. diagnosed it as gastrointeritis and she's on a special prescription dog food. It happens much less frequently after we switched her food

Our dog has that happen occasionally. Vet told us that if the dog eats something different, has an upset stomach, etc., you can have mucus develop. It works as an aid in digestion (in the intestines especially) and has to come out once it's done it's "work"! I'm sure the pooch is fine! Good luck!

on the bright side, you know what it is and its treatable.... ive had 2 dogs that have had to be placed on strict diets due to medical related or allergy issues... its not the end of the world... you will adjust. Good luck!

Our dog has colitis. He was on his regular food along with prescription food that be had to buy from the vet. We were spending $80.00 in dog food a month. We kept trying all brands of natural foods and finally we have him on Health Extension. He no longer needs the precrition food. It;s $50.00 for a 40lb bag. I now spend $100 a month on dog food but i also have three dogs  Good luck.
