My 3 1/2 just started doing this and it scares me to death! Usually my dh is outside but still, I do not feel comfortable with him doing this.

And, oh.....it does NOT get easier-lol!! I have an 8 year old too.

I've been there. I hate to tell you but I don't think it ever gets easier.

Chain high is the best option.

Re: My 26 month old daughter opened the front door by herself, and ran outside...

This happened to us while visting my SIL in GA...

We baby proofed her house (or so we thought) I was cooking in the kitchen- DH was in the bedroom, and DS was going back and forth to the living room and bedroom playing...

I walked down the hall to stay lunch was ready, and asked DH- "where DS?" I turned around and the front door was wide open..!!!

My heart stopped and I bolted to the door and there he was just standing there... When I called to him he just looked at me- shrugged- and said "Where Foof-foofs???"

I literally stood there holding him, crying for 10 min.- all those what ifs- going through my head...

Thank God- he cant do that with our doors in our house!

Re: My 26 month old daughter opened the front door by herself, and ran outside...

DS doesn't hang out near the front door when we aren't with him (gates and doors keep him away.... for now...), but we have the doorknob guards for doors we don't want him to open. Could you put one of those on the front door? That way, DH could still get in the house from outside, but DS couldn't get out. That's the only issue I have with the chains. I was thinking about it for a while, but then realized that it prevents anyone from the other side of the door from coming in.

Alex is 20 months old and she has already figured out how to open all the doors inside the house, and the screen door to the outside - it worries me to no end...

Thanks for all the good ideas. I should definately get one of those door knob covers, at least that would slow her down some more! Fortunately my alarm beeps any time a door in the house is opened or shut, so even if I'm in another room I'd know very quickly that it happened.
