My 2yo has bacterial pneumonia...I need recs on getting her to eat.

She's drinking when I offer it to her. But I can barely get her to eat anything more than a few bites. Not even favorite foods.

Anyone have any tricks that worked?

When DD is that sick, I will offer her ANYTHING. Ice cream, ice pops. Just to get something in her. If she's really sick, sometimes she just won't eat and there's nothing I can do

My girls have been sick recently esp my older one who had mono. She was barely eating. I got beef broth, diced up into small pieces carrots and cooked them in the soup with a little onion that I took out before she ate it (she liked the taste with the onion but won't eat onions). Then I cook a little pastina or stars into it. Easy to swallow with some nutrients and some protein. I also make my own chicken soup.

Can she have dairy? My older one can't but with my younger one I would give yogurt smoothies, make your own fruit shakes with ice, yogurt, and fruit. What about yogurt ice pops. At least they have protein and vitamins.

What about french toast. I dip bread into egg with a little cinn. And drizzle a little honey. Hard boil eggs.

Leave food out for her to graze on. She might pick up a snack as she walks by and not even realize it.

I did decide to do that. She saw I bought bananas, & asked for one & ate 3/4 of it. She ate a bite of cheese, few bites of raviolis, offered milk & juice all day.

I guess it's better than nothing. She's not running around all day, so I don't expect her to eat normal amounts anyway. I'm just afraid for her to eat too little.Chat Icon

Its most important for them to drink, but she's not feeling well so her appetite may be very poor. Keep nutritional snacks that are light and not sugary handy and do not expect a clean plate. Its most important that she drink and keep hydrated. Is she super congested and coughing a lot? Sometimes coughing a lot hurts the belly. Also having a lot of congestion can make a sick stomach. Also if she is having a hard time breathing (you stop breathing when you swallow for a second) then instincts take over...first priority O2.

When DS is sick I will usually keep meals light (scrambled eggs, toast, crackers, pasta with a little butter, etc). I wouldnt worry too much, but if you see her getting increasingly weak, call the ped immediately.

Today she ate her 1st bowl of oatmeal & I added some honey. And then she had a fruit with oatmeal squeeze. So maybe the antibiotics are kicking in!!!Chat Icon

Sometimes I get DS "special juice" to get him to drink. He likes gatorade b/c its blue or I put it in a special cup...or just tell him its special.

Glad she's eating more.
