My baby is due to arrive in June. Dh & I live at the pool / beach all summer. Will we be able to enjoy those activities with our newborn? What products should we buy for sun protection?
Thanks ladies. I'm really worried about this because we spend summers outdoors. We also have a great backyard for bbqs - please help me register for products for this time of the year.

They don't recommend sun exposure for newborns so some type of tent will be a necessity. We have one from One Step Ahead but I don't love it. They may have a variety now----we bought ours over 2 years ago. I would invest in something with UV protection.
ETA: I just checked the website and they do have a small family cabana with UV protection for $79.

My son was born last year in May, and I had to forgo the beach for the summer.
As far as I know there are no sunblock products that can be used on a newborn. You will have to just keep your baby in the shade.
I was terrified of giving my son a sunburn so just did not go the beach. We hung out in our own back yard where I could make sure that he was always shaded.

Based on my experience with a June baby, I'm not sure how feasible that "lifestyle" will be this summer. I've always said that I "watched summer go by outside my window" the year DD was born. However, that said, I'm sure there will be other people who chime in with completely different opinions/experiences.

I took DD was a June baby and we took her when she was 6 weeks and older to my parents community pool (in your town) and it was great! They have a covered section with chairs and tables with umbrellas - so there was plenty of shade. My ped said no sun screen at that age so it is a little harder.
I think one step ahead and some other companies make tents that have UVF protection and you can take those to the beach. I think the beach is MUCH harder to work with.

Same here except DS was born in June......even the heat can be bad for a newborn. On days when it was very hot this summer I went for walks at the mall instead! Or I used to do early morning & late afternoon walks always being sure to hang a lite blanket over the stroller to block the sun when on him.

Coolibar.com sells hats and clothing for babies with strong UV protection. However, they are on the thicker and warmer side. I see that many people recommended tents but please be aware of how hot they can get. The definitely get too hot for a newborn if they are in the direct sun. I would only use them in the shade to offer added protection.
IMO you should probably look for alternate things to do this summer from your usual beach and outdoor lifestyle, at least until your baby is a few months old.

My ped recommended mornings or late afternoons for walking or going out - otherwise it can be too hot.

my DS was born in sept, but if he was born in June, I would keep him indoors as much as possible. baby doesn't have temp control like we do and can overheat very easily. I don't think you will be able to have your normal summertime routine.

I actually did the opposite.
My DS was born at the end of April, so when he was 5 weeks I checked with my ped and he said "off the record" that we could use Waterbabies sunblock and keep him covered and use a tent.
We did all of that, but he was on the beach from 11 weeks on, and in Florida when he was 12 weeks old.
My DS has never so much as had a tinge of red on him. So I say go for it!

There's a big difference, though, between a newborn and an 11 week old. The OP could do that later in the summer (maybe August, depending on when the baby is born), but not likely June and July.

ITA I just saw that your baby is due in June IMO you should skip your normal summertime routine until your baby is at least 12 weeks old.

We are a beach family and spend every weekend at the beach. DD was a May baby and I "thought" we would be at the beach every weekend with her, but it didn't happen. She was too young and it was too hot. DS was born in September, so when summer came around, he was 9 months and we were at the beach avery weekend. I brought my pack/play and had an umbrella over it. He was able to play with his toys and be protected from the sun. I also recommend the wonder wheeler to carry all your items. It is the best thing, you can carry a cooler, 4 chairs, toys, pack/play whatever you bring to the beach and the wheels are for the sand. Google wonder wheeler and see what it looks like.

i live at the beach and/or outdoors all summer.
DS was born at the beginning of july--i kept him indoors or in the shade the whole summer. you can't use ANY sunscreen on a baby under 5-6 months and the heat/sun isn't good for them either.
we went away to the shore when DS was 2 months old in september. it wasn't too hot but it was sunny. even with a full body suit and hat he was miserable in the sun for even a minute. we just went in the indoor pool (even though we technically weren't allowed since he was in a swim diaper) and let him play in the bathtub.
IMO you'll need to sacrifice this summer. do other things with the baby. a sunburn on a baby is VERY dangerous, as is heatstroke.
also, i had very little desire to do any of the things i usually do in the summer---i just wanted to spend time with DS.

Besides the fact that they can't wear sunscreen, it's a HUGE PITA to take a baby to the beach. All the gear involved, the bottles, etc. Just seems like more work than it's worth!!

I was at the pool/beach with both my kids the summers they were born (May/June babies).
But I was probably at the beach only twice each summer. It is somewhat of a PIA, and not necessarily worth the effort.
I spent a lot of afternoons by the pool (in my parents back yard). MUCH easier to deal with than the beach.

I totally agree with that! Its even tougher with a toddler (especially when you try it alone!)...the pool was fine for us the first summer (2 months +) and we tried to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day.
