my birth story- long- updated with photos.

Hi everyone.

we were released out of the hopsital today- and I figured I'd share my birth story while my little angel sleeps between feedings!

On wednesday the 25th I posted that I lost my mucus plug. the next day, thursday morning- I thought I lost some amniotic fluid and I brought it up to my doctor... she sent me to the hospital and I was there all day. At that point, I hadn't broken my water, but they were nervous b/c my blood pressure was high and made me do the 24 hour urine collection for preeclampsia.

On Friday I worked all day until about 7pm. We were frantically going through everything.. it isn't that I had a "feeling" but it was getting crazy and I was having contractions about every 4 minutes since the day before- so we figured lets steam roll through work.

At 7pm I left and took a cab to Beth Israel to drop off the urine sample and get my blood pressure checked again- all was fine- spoke with the doctor- told her I was still having contractions- she said I was in early labor and could be there for a while so not to worry.

I took the train home and DH picked me up at about 9.15. He was with my dad- my dad had brought everything "big" from the shower to my house (yes, the nursery is still in shambles).... that is another story.

At about 10pm I went to bed and at around 12am I woke up b/c I had either peed myself or broke my water.. I called the doctor at the hospital (the same one I had just seen a few hours before) and she said to put on a pad and to see if more comes out- if so, b/c I was StrepB positive, I would have to come in.

DH and I figured- OK lets chill and see what happens. I laid back down and slept for another hour or so- and then when I got up to go to the bathroom- bam- my water was broken and it was coming out.

Of course I started to cry b/c I was SO tired b/w working late, the previous day in the hospital- I really wanted a good night rest. That obviouslly wasn't to be. At 2am we made our way into the city (great- no traffic at least). I was taken to triage and admitted.

Once in the labor and delivery room the contractions were picking up- I was between 3-4 centermeters at that point and 100% effaced. They gave me an IV for the Strep B, an IV of fluids and pitocin... the contractions started to come hard & fast, and by around 6 am I asked for the epidural- the pitocin made it very hard for me to breathe through the contractions- they were just coming too fast & I couldn't "catch a break"- once I had the epidural (which by the way hurt WAY less than the stupid IV they put in) I felt so good I was able to nap.

Then... thing started to get a little crazy. The baby's heartbeat was having a hard time rebouding from the contractions which were 1 minute apart. So they turned off the pitocin and she was doing fine.

At around 8.30 am the doc on call from my practice came in and told the nurse to turn the pitocin back on, but very low (i guess I was on "5" before and they put it on "2"). The baby didn't like this- and the same thing started happening again.. this time, when they turned off the pitocin, they couldn't get the baby's heart beat back up.

It all happened so fast- I got on all fours- to help slow down the contractions (not so easy to do when you have an epidural and can barely feel your legs). After approximately 1 minute of that- I was on my way flying down the hall in my bed to have an emergency c-section.

I was on the operating table so fast- I really didn't have time to freak out- they literally threw the bentadine solution on my stomach and were cutting. Unfortunately I was able to feel it - it felt like a weird "wire" being pushed down there but I don't know- after about 5 seconds of me thrashing around and the doc complaining that I was moving my legs- I was out- they put my under general. I had to be intubated and everything.

Just as DH was scrubbed up and ready to come in, Madeline was born and crying away. It all happened so fast. Yes I'm bummed I didn't get the birth experience I wanted. Recovering from the C-Section has been Ok_ not horrible b/c I've really been forcing myself to move around through the pain and not take the drugs they give you. Believe it or not- it's the gas build up and constapation that is more painful than the incision!

Officially, Madeline Paige was born at 5 lbs, 13 ounces and 18 1/2 inches long- not too bad for being almost a month early. I'll post photos soon.

Oh- the breastfeeding as been tough- the pediatrician says that really 6 pounds is the "magic #" and she might be too small and not strong enough to suck- I met with the LC already and our latch is good- she just gives a few sucks and falls right asleep- so i'm pumping away and giving her what I can and at least I feel good about THAT contribution :)

Even though my experience was totally scary- it was so worth it- the pain was worth it- and it wasn't even that bad- the labor pains, the epidural, the c-section, nothing. So don't worry ladies- I was so nervous about it- if I can do it, you can too.Chat Icon External Image
