My birth story...Jason Joseph...September 6, 2009

The day I went into labor is such a whirlwind because it happened so quickly.

I woke up around 6am on September 6th (it was a Sunday) feeling just fine. At this point, I was 1 week & a day past my EDD. DH joked to me that it was another day that we would not have this baby. DH left the house around 8:45am to go bowling with his father. I did some normal Sunday chores around the house. Around 9:45am, I decided to go have my breakfast on the front porch & wait for DH to come home. Around 10am, I started to have some menstrual cramping but thought nothing of it. I had the urge to use the bathroom, so I proceeded inside to do so. All of a sudden, out of no where, I was getting cramping every 7-8 minutes lasting a good minute. It was about 10:15 & I knew my DH would be home around 10:45, so I headed to the couch to time my "cramping" not even thinking they were contractions.

The contractions started to get to the point of unbearable & I kept getting the urge to use the bathroom. DH walked in the door to find me in tears in the bathroom & that is when I finally realized "I WAS IN LABOR!" DH went into stir crazy mode getting things into the car & trying to eat something. I finally called the OB around 11:15 when the pressure was becoming so unbearable. I was told to head directly to South Nassau.

Right as we were leaving the house, I had a major contraction where I could not move. DH had to walk me down the steps one at a time stopping for about 30 seconds on each step. The entire ride to the hospital I didn't have one contraction. I decided it was best for me to walk from the parking lot to keep the labor progressing. As we started to walk, the contractions were back.

We got into L&D at South Nassau and proceeded to our own room immediately. The resident Dr came in immediately to check me & I was 6cm & almost 100% effaced. The contractions were unbearable at this point & I pleaded for an EPI....I had to labor only about 1 hour with intense contractions. My water broke on its own at 1:20 while they were prepping me for the EPI. My OB commented on how intense my contractions where for only starting at 10am! By 1:45 I was in heaven with the EPI & taking a nap. My OB checked my again at 3 & I had not progressed anymore. They told me that if by 4PM I had not moved past 6cm, I would need to be put on pitocin to speed up the contractions. DH & I relaxed while the hour wasted away & found out that I still had no progression at 4PM. I was put on pitocin & told that if by 5PM there was no progression, I was headed for a C-section. My OB came in at 5 & I had not changed but my effacement was actually decreasing. I was having a major contraction at the time of the internal so they pushed to see if the baby would fit. That is when it was determined that my cervix was not big enough to fit DS out.

I got prepped for the C-section with two spinals & was rolled into the OR at 5:20pm. I was told that cutting would begin around 5:38 & so it did. I did not feel a thing. At 5:44, I heard the best sound I could ask for, DS crying as they pulled him out! He was fully engaged in my cervix but there was no way he was coming out! I cried hysterically when I heard my DS crying....Jason Joseph came into the world weighing in at 7lbs 15 oz & 21 inches. He scored an 8/9 on his APGAR & was wide awake from the moment he came out! Because of the pain meds I was on, I don't even remember seeing DS when they brought him over to me.

All in all, even though I had my heart set on a vaginal birth, the C-section worked out for the best for us! The recovery was challenging but I was determined to be healed, so I made myself get up & move around. DS had to be sent to NICU on the 7th due to the fact that I tested + for Group B Strep & he needed antibotics. It was so hard to see DS in the NICU but we knew it was for the best. That was also my motivation for recovery bc I had to walk to see DS.

South Nassau was a wonderful hospital. I never felt like I was actually in one. The staff was very accommodating & helpful. Having my own private room was the best. There were nights I could not sleep, so I was up walking around the room & I think if I had a roommate, I would have been more inclined to stay in bed.

So without further waiting, here is our little angel that we waited so long for:
