Thats so odd to me and my poor son is so anxious. Just knowing the name, knowing if its a man or woman would help. The secretary told me they wont find out until they get off the bus! NUTS if you ask me.

That's very weird. DC found out a few days ago, and actually met their teachers at an Open House yesterday. Especially for the Kindergartners. They really need to recognize a face for their class. We spend years teaching them not to talk to strangers, then send them on a bus to spend the entire day with a stranger that neither they nor their parents have ever seen before....

After Kindergarten, it's a bit different, but for K, they really should know a little bit about their teacher....

Also, what if there is an issue? If you know the teacher beforehand, it can be resolved. What if DC wasn't actually assigned a teacher? I'm sure it happens. Talk about a traumatic 1st day at school!

Our school is the same way. I think it is to avoid parents calling up, trying to get their child switched to another class because they want another teacher. Parents can still call after school starts, but the classes are set and there is usually no rearranging. Other than that, I don't see any reason for waiting.

Ugh..that's awful!

If administration can't handle parents calling and wanting to switch...they aren't cut out to be administration!

That is how it used to be when I was a kid.

This is exactly why more districts are not giving out teacher assignments or class schedules until the 1st day of school. Administration takes WEEKS and WEEKS to get classes set, and scheduling done. Its a tedious and LONG process. Parents think they can just call up and complain "Oh, Johnny does not like Mikey, so they can't be together"... or "I heard that teacher was not fun, we want a fun teacher"... and its not 1 or 2 parents, its more like HUNDREDS. There is not enough time in the day to deal with it all while preparing for a new school year, new standards, new protocols, etc etc etc.

To the OP: Please try to be patient and realize that your child will be fine... the first day is nerve wracking, but he/she will not be alone. Hope the 1st day goes well!

I think it is terrible to do this to a child! The admins can't deal so they dump the burden on the kids???? F'd up IMO

What burden? They go to school, get their assignment, and go to their class.

The kindergarteners are met at the steps of the bus and brought to their teacher.

Not really a big deal IMO.

ITA. That is how we did it when we were in school. My middle schooler only knows her homeroom and not her entire schedule.
I can IMAGINE all the calls the school gets and they shouldn't be able to change teachers.

But they can still call on the 1st day of school, at what I would think would be the worst time, since they have so much to deal with anyway. When the parents find out is not going to stop them from calling.

In Connetquot, the district rule is you can only request a change if you have personal experience with that teacher (so we can never make a request for DS, who is our oldest, only DD), and you can only make either 1 or 2 requests during their entire school career in the district.

I know the process, I'm a teacher. Which is why, I think that it's an easy way out for administration. I work in a district that has very demanding parents, but like Shawn said, our policy is that only if you have already had an experience with a teacher can you request not to have them. Our administration stands up to frivolous demands and I just think that for the sake of the really young ones (middle school is a different story), other administrators should be able to as well.

I started K in 1979 and I always knew my teacher's name going in the first day (actually, I think we found out the last day of school).

ITA! And as a mom of a child who is not looking forward to Kindergarten it helps to have the name of his teacher so he feels a little more familiar.

AND I totally agree that admins are just trying to avoid the annoying phone calls, butthey are causing more stress on our little ones. We drill our kids about strangers yet you are forced to take them to a place they have never been and leaving them there with someone they don't know and you don't even know their name. Thats absurd! Parents should get the assignment and I feel the child should have an orientation with that teacher (for Kindergarten anyway)

We got our assignments about 2 weeks ago which was fine. i'm sure the principal has been getting calls from parents, but put your big girl panties on and stand up to the parents! Let them know they don't run the school! Deal with it, that is why they get paid the big bucks! (At least in Nassau county) It isn't fair to put that onto the kids.

I remember it being so much fun to call all your friends and compare teachers and find out who was in your class.

IMO every school should do it this way for Kindergarten.

And you bring up a very good point. My friend got her daughters teacher assignment and it was for the WRONG SCHOOL!!! Had she not gotten that in advance she would have never known. She would have shown upwith her daughter on the first day of school and they would have had no place for her.

Re: My child doesnt know who their teacher is until they get off the bus!

We just found out this past week- Although my son doesn't know anything about the teacher other than her name, we were at least able to contact other parents see who their children got as a teacher. My son feels so much better going into 1st grade knowing one of his best friends will be in his class.

Well, my son is not a Kindergartener. He is 10 years old going into 5th grade. not only does he have ADHD, Tourettes and OCD but he also has anxiety. He is going to a new school. He doesnt know anyone, but I just felt like knowing the name of his teacher would make him feel better. Is it a man or a woman etc? Whats his room #.

My 5 year old who is in Kindergarten has been walking around telling EVERYONE Mrs. Hoppe is his teacher again and again and again. hes thrilled to go to school and he already loves Mrs. Hoppe. My older son has NO idea and seems scared about the whole thing.
