My children have huge heads, now with a pic
Ryan had to have a head CT (which was hell) as his head was measuring off the charts in December.. and now Erin is following in her big brothers foot steps. Erin's head circumference is off the charts like her brother's and she will need one too.
Ughhhhhh... the whole thing was such an ordeal and I am not looking forward to doing it again....
Maybe they have big brains?
This pic is the first one I saw of the 2.. as you can see, they LOVE to smile for the camera! I never thought that Erin's head looked big.. Ryan sure has a big one though Image Attachment(s):

Re: My children have huge heads
My oldest has a melon too and he does have a big brain, very smart. Most of the time it's heredity...my DH apparently has a big head according to my pediatrician. Ironically, my other 2 kids were c-sections and they were average headed newborns. The one in the 98% was a v-birth. How cruel is life?

Re: My children have huge heads
What are they looking for when they do an MRI? My niece has a HUGE head...her height is in the 20th percentile but her head is measuring in the 90th percentile. She is only 4 1/2 months old. It looks very out of proportion witht he rest of her body. BIL and SIL have not said anything about it to DH or myself so we never asked but I would be concerned if I were them.

Re: My children have huge heads
I think that they just want to rule out any abnormalities, even though they know that she just has a large head.

My cousin's kids are like this. The older one looked kind of like ET when he was really little. However, they grow into it and are healthy, normal, good looking kids.

They don't usually request an MRI unless the head is off the charts. At 98% my DS never got one. They are looking for cephalic disorders - abnormalities in the nervous system. Sounds like the OP's is hereditary otherwise I would never joke about my son's head.
Now you have me thinking...I didn't mean to sound flippant about it. It can be a very serious underlying condition but many times it is heredity. They do the MRI to be safe more than out of alarm in most cases.

Re: My children have huge heads
We all have HUGE heads in family. I was always very self conscious of it as my head was always bigger than my boyfriends' and now is the same size as DH (and he's 6'2). My brother had to go to a neurologist and my parents dragged all of us and they overheard the nurse say, "Here comes the family with the big heads ". So I guess it is hereditary. I find babies with bigger heads are cuter, but I guess I'm conditioned to think that way DD is in the 75th% for her head.

Re: My children have huge heads
We had to go to a neurologist due to my DS's huge head. It measured off the charts for his age. My DH happened to be there and his head is enormous, he wears a XXXL motorcycle helmet (but he's a pretty big guy overall, so it's not like he looks like a Pez dispenser or something) So the neurologist measured his head and sure enough, it was off the charts for an adult. They chalked it up to just heredity.

Re: My children have huge heads
My daughter's head is off the charts too. She had a head sono at 6 months. I wonder why your doc and my doc sent us for two different tests. Any ideas?

Well, Ryan went for a head CT, he is 2.
DH brought Erin today to the Dr, which is always a mistake because he never remembers anything and tells me the wrong info- but I digress , and I have the script and it says head ultrasound.. so I was wrong initially in thinking it was a CT scan.
So I call Good Sam tomorrow and get this thing started!

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
My family has big heads as well! When my brother was born they put him through testing, and he was fine When brother #2 was born, my mom turned down the testing and when I was born the Dr say...ahh another one.
When my nephew was little he was all head And now DS was in the 95%tile at 10 weeks. The Dr made a comment and I said dont worry, line up my family and well all have big heads!
Sometimes it just runs in the family!

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
In that picture I don't think they look large at all. I'm sure everything will work out great with your DD, and they will find a huge brain growing in there
DD's head measures in the 90th-percentile.

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
My head is enormous - I look at pictures of me as a baby (and I was bald until I was 18 months) and it's very noticeable. My parents told me that once I was 3 or so it really wasnt noticeable.
People are always really surprised when I tell them I have a huge head because it's just not noticeable - then I try and put on their hats and they never fit.
When I graduated college they had to get a special mortar board because none would fit my head . . . same thing when I got my PhD cap.
Your babies are full of brains!!!!!!!

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
My son has a big head....actually it is the only part of his body that was the correct size at birth---even as a preemie! The neurologist measured my dh head and said wow! The endocrinologist told us that it is very common for the Irish! Go Big Green!!

At 5 months Elizabeth's head was in the 90% percentile. We go on Saturday for her six month visit so we'll see if her body has caught up!

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
I actually read an article saying that babies with big heads had less chance of developing Alzheimers when older. Because they had more brain cells than someone with smaller size head.

Re: My children have huge heads, now with a pic
DH has a huge head as does his brothers. When my SIL was pregnant, the dr. was convinced something was wrong even though she kept saying 'no, you have to see my husbands head" sure enough my nephew is fine, he's just got the familys big head.
