My DD's choice of "outfit" today, made me recall a disagreement with a family member...

About a month ago, a family member of mine (who has two young children (who are pretty ill-behaved...but I digress. Chat Icon)) said, "OMG, I was at the store today and there was a little boy who had to be four wearing a costume! A COSTUME! And nowhere near Halloween...can you imagine?!? Chat Icon "

I replied telling her that Abby (who will be 3 on Saturday) frequently wears costumes out. Her typical is a simple bride's dress...with or without the veil. And I said "Sometimes you have to pick your battles...plus I think most people think it's cute." And she replied with "Well, that's one battle I'd be picking!"

Now today, Abby decided she wanted to wear a full-on Tinkerbell costume to pick up her sister from school (we walk about two long blocks)...complete with Minnie Mouse in a baby stroller! Chat Icon And I was wondering (even though I couldn't care less what others think), are people rolling their eyes at us or do they think it's cute? I will tell you we get stopped alllll the time when she's dressed up. "How cute!" "Look at the bride!" Etc. Etc. But who would stop me to say the opposite soooo....

A battle to be picked or not?

Alex dresses in costume all the time - I encourage it - I think it's really important to encourage our children to be and think creatively and independently, which includes role-playing! I think it's absolutely adorable when Alex does it, and when I see other kids at school doing it. It brings a smile to my face - I mean, really, let kids be kids already!

I don't see the big deal if its to do some errands but if you have to go somewhere that she needs to dress nicely then I would tell her no.

I don't see anything wrong. Kids play dressup all the time. My nephew loved his Hulk costume so he'd wear it once in a while (no where near Halloween Chat Icon Chat Icon )

It was a little phase when he was about 4. He's 8 now and is perfectly fine. In fact, he's a very smart kid (and no longer wears costumes). THey're kids... let them have their imagination Chat Icon

Now-a-days there's no room for imagination anymore anyway with TV, movies, computers, video games, etc

I don't see the problem..I still wear costumes to run errands all the timeChat Icon But seriously, I totally agree with Beth, let her be her and wear her costume...now if she wanted to wear a string bikini on the other hand, that is a battle I would pickChat Icon

I had heard that it was good to let your child pick out their own outfits because its a form of self expression. And if you didn't let them wear what they picked out what kind of message is that sending them as far as confidence wise? (Assuming it's nothing crazy like a bathing suit in December!) But yes I will be the mother who brings their kid to preschool wearing a polka dot top with striped pants and two different colored socks if thats what they picked out for the day.

ITA this would be the only time I would step in and have a say in what they wear.

Who cares? The only time you get to do something like that is when you're a kid. If I saw an adult do that I would think hmmmm. A kid never! It's adorable! Let them be free. They have their entire lives to worry about what someone thinks of them.

Lily wears her Snow White costume pretty much every day. I see nothing wrong with it....it makes her happy, and she looks darn cute in it!
And I spent $$$$$ on it, so I feel better that I'm getting my money's worth.

Although....I posted pictures of her in it recently....I wonder if people were judging me behind the scenes about it.....Chat Icon

We are a costume friendly house here...She usually doesn't want to wear them out, but I don't see the big deal...

Re: My DD's choice of "outfit" today, made me recall a disagreement with a family member...

My DD loves her tutus. As long as we're not going anywhere special or to day care, she can wear it. I don't even care that they usually don't match her outfits - which is big for me because she had 2 dozen pairs of shoes as an infant just so she could match.

But really, where's the harm? I look at it this way: it makes your kid happy and feel like they have a little control over their lives, and frankly, it's one less thing to fight about. For me it's a bargaining chip too - i.e., you can wear your tutu to the park but you have to give mommy your paci.

I'm curious to hear from the people who said "Not my kid" as to why.
It's not often asked here but if she really wants to wear a costume out and it's not a completely inappropriate place to wear it (like school) then I see no harm in it.

I don't see a problem. There is only so long you are a kid and can get away with wearing a costume for fun.

I think it's cute!

I think its adorable. DS wore a construction helmet and tool belt for a week straight and wherever we went people loved it. I think its good to encourage creativity!

If you are attending a wedding or a funeral with DC, yes, the costume would be inappopriate. Outside of that, I see no problem with this--pick different battles!

On a 3 or 4 year old I think it's cute - If she was older, I think I'D probably make that one of my chosen battles .....

Definately not a battle to pick- Grace wears anything she wants as long as it's weather appropriate. I could care less. Most times she does a great job. One time she did pick a really hideous outfit and her teacher told me she thought DH dressed herChat Icon
Tinkerbell outfit for a walk to school- go for it! When else do you get to be a kid and wear what you want.
