My doctor HATES HATES HATES needles
Had my doctor's appointment this morning and did the glucose test and got the rhogam shot. The nurse takes my blood for the glucose test and my doctor comes in later for my exam and my rhogam shot.
He takes the syringe/needle out and starts saying "Oh I hate giving shots - I hate getting shots - but I really hate giving shots - are you going to be ok? Do you need a drink of water? Should I have a drink of water? Is it hot in here?"
And the whole time I'm fine - I've never had a problem with needles. . . but he kept going on about how much he HATES them. He says he freaks out when he has to get a shot - he said he's the worst patient ever.
And this guy has been an MD for over 20 years!
When it was over I actually said "Good job!"
It just never occurred to me that a doctor might have a problem with getting and giving shots.

I should also add that he is FINE with doing c-sections - he's a teaching doctor at NYU and teaches residents and interns how to do them! He said it's something about the neede, rather than the scalpel that just gets to him.

Wow, i dont know if that would make me feel better b/c he is sympathetic, or if it would make me feel nervous b/c he doesnt like giving them.
I remember at my first ob appt, the assistant was trying to draw blood and she must have stuck the needle in my arm about 5 times before finally getting any blood. Now whenever i need blood drawn, i just go to the lab.
My internal dr is pretty good at giving shots, before you know whats happening, its over

I have a small problem giving shots/drawing blood b/c I feel bad. I am a self-proclaimed "needle weenie"!

Yup, I agree. It's a little weird to disclose in that profession!
Yeah, but he really only has to give the rhogam shot - and that isnt for every patient. The nurse does all the needle work, IV's, etc.
I just thought it was weird. . . but he really is a nice guy and a good doctor.

Me too - I can just picture you having to reassure your doctor. Geez.
Thank God you are okay with shots - he must really work some of his patients up.

I agree it's something he shouldn't share with his patients, especially in the manner you described. It wouldn't bother you or I because we don't care about needles. But I know people who would have flipped out if their doc showed any sign of being nervous or uncomfortable because they can't stand needles.

This is why I couldn't pursue a career in nursing...the thought of giving someone a shot! My mom [a nurse] thinks I'm nuts. And yes, doctors and nurses do tend to be horrible patients...nothing is wrong with them and they really don't understand what all the fuss is about.
