My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
she is a maltese/poodle mix and is very sweet. she gets into things time to time and i pull things from her mouth all the time (socks, papers, etc.)
yesterday she got hold of a popsicle stick. when i went to pull it from her mouth, she growled and showed me her teeth. she has NEVER done this before. i can pet her while she's eating food, treats, ANYthing and i haven't seen this behavior.
i rolled her onto her back and the popsicle stick fell out, but there was a small piece of it still clamped in her teeth. i grabbed it and she bit my middle finger!
i'm devastated. what do i do?
also, last night, she started chewing the corner of a blanket and when FH went to grab it from her, she growled.
i have NEVER EVER seen this behavior and don't know what to do.
help?? she is 3 yrs old.

I would repremand her. Even a little swat on the nose.

Re: My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
she may not have bitten you when eating her regular dog food before bc she didnt find it worthy of her being possesive with it. My dog has the same problem.
I have talked to many dog trainers. We taught Murray to leave it and that usually works, he will drop it.

Re: My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
Instead of trying to pull things out of her mouth, I taught Kasey "Drop It". I started playing tug of war with one of her toys, I'd tell her to drop it and when she released I'd give her a treat. Like all commands it takes a while, but she did learn. Now when she gets something we really don't want her to have I say "Drop It" and she does.
I also use "Leave It" when I see her going towards something she shouldn't have.

That usually works best...

Re: My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
so, i shouldn't be concerned about the snarling? is this something all dogs do?
i thought i had a bigger issue on my hands than just the fact that she wouldn't let go of the popsicle stick. i didn't let her sleep with us, thinking that she needs to realize that she is subordinate to us. is this not necessary?

to me it is def an issue. Doesnt mean this will happen with your dog but my dog has aggression issues and that is something, among other things, that he does. He will bite if he gets something he shouldnt and you try to take it away. We have since hired a trainer and it is much improved. The dog biting you means she thinks she is more dominant in that situation and can tell you to leave her alone by biting you. That is NEVER ok. It is NEVEr okay for her to bite you. So try all the excercises above. I am no expert but your dog may be showing signs on some dominance issues.

I have been told this is the worst thing you can do. You are treating aggression with aggression. I would ask an expert about this one... JMO

Funny you say that. My male dog would come back even more so if we physically reprimand him, such as a tap (I mean tap) on the nose. So you may be right on this one with some dogs. Yet my girl dog would def respond to the nose tap.

My dog never bit me or even growled at me so who knows how I might react if she did. I hope I would regain my "pack leader status " This is a scary situation and it could be anyone of us. I will tell you this I would be so upset.. As the original poster probably feels. But yes it definately depends on the dog..

Re: My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
My first dog Molly was crazy and would flip when we took something from her. She would go after our hands. We tried "Drop it" and that would never work.
The ONLY way we could get her to drop what she had was for a treat. If we tried to get it out her mouth she would have bitten us for sure.

Re: My dog bit me yesterday and I don't know what to do
if this is really an abnormal behavior i would definetly keep a close eye on her, sometime a quick change in behavior can mean a neurologic disorder, so if she keeps it up u might want to see your vet.
