my dog is in heat.. lots of Qs
Ok. Long story short. I rescued a dog in late August. We had scheduled an appointment to have her spayed on Friday (we've had this appt since we got her). Well, mother nature had different plans and I woke up to find Daisy in heat. She has been bred before & is 5 years old. The breeder I rescued her from *thought* her last cycle was in April. Apparently not...
Does anyone know what the symptoms are? Obviously she is bleeding but she is very lazy, whining/crying, etc. She isn't herself.
Does anyone know of any websites where I can get information on how to care for her? Yes, I already got doggie diapers for her. All I have found is websites saying 'keep male dogs away'
Anyone have experience with this? Please help! Thank you!

Re: my dog is in heat.. lots of Qs
Other than keeping her away from male dogs and keeping her calm, I don't think there's much you can do. A friend of mine is a breeder and I know she says the females can get very nervous and anxious during their heat cycles -- so it's important not to overstimulate the dog and can be helpful to give her extra attention.
Do you have another dog? If so, you might want to keep them apart unless they are supervised. Your female may not feel much like playing right now... You might also want to keep smaller children away from her if they like to rough house. She may not feel up to it and might not be as friendly as usual. (Most dogs are just fine during their heat cycles - but since your not familiar with her cycles, I'd be extra careful this first - and hopefully last - time.)
If you go out, maybe leave some classical music or other soothing noise on so she isn't so anxious. If you think she is in distress or acting really out of the ordinary, give your vet a call.
Good luck.

Re: my dog is in heat.. lots of Qs
Thank you! No, thankfully we don't have any other dogs. We rescheduled her spaying to Oct 24th so this is the one & only time
Shes usually a very active, happy, playful dog.. she is sooooo boring, sleepy, & lazy. The change in behavior is what concerns me. This dog NEVER sleeps.. Shes been passed out all day
kara- I really appreciate it!

Hi, Ican help.
First of all, you likely need to reschedule her spaying again. My dog, who is a small breed, had a heat cycle that lasted ONE month. She bled on and off for a mth. What happened was I was going to get her spayed and she went into heat sooner than I had anticipated (her first and last one of course).
It is VERY important that she be out of the heat (so past the end of the heat cycle) for about a month or 6 weeks. Reason being is that her uterus, etc is engorged with blood and it can be risky to her health for them to do surgery while she is engorged, due to a bleeding risk during the surgery. My vet wanted me to wait about a month or so after the heat cycle had finished.
She will be moody, tired, she may try to HUMP. My girl tried to hump my male so we had to keep them seperated. My male is neutered but still, he did not like it and plus, I did not want a habit of humping starting since my male has never humped and I would like to keep it that way. So we kept them seperated when we were not home so she would not harass him. I mean, she literally kept going after him and we would say NO!, and take her off of him. But boy was she relentless!
Her nipples and vulva area will swell up, so don't worry there. And yes, you will need the diapers. We didn't think we would need it but boy did we. Also, if ANY little drop of blood got onto the floor, my male (FIXED MALE) would pee on it! It was just instinct. Luckily you don't have another dog, so that's good. But be very careful when walking her and DON"T leave her in a yard unattended. The males can really track down a girl in heat, so you cannot leave her unattended ever for a while now! Also, before the heat started, when we would walk our dogs and run into neighbors, males would try to sniff my girl's parts and she would squeal! I guess they could smell her cycle coming. Even now, she still gets upset when any dog tries to sniff her coochie, poor girl.
Rest assured, once you get her fixed about a mth after her heat has totally finished (bleeding, brown or red, stops for a few days totally and swelling starts to subside, behavior goes back to normal, etc), she will be just fine and all will go back to normal for her in time after she heals.
Anything else you want to know? Hopefully I can help, let me know.

The breeder I rescued her from *thought* her last cycle was in April. Apparently not...
And I just read this.... Dogs have heat cycles twice a year so April would be correct.
That's why it's important to wait about a mth to 6 weeks after the heat cycle is DONE< but not too long, b/c another heat cycle does sneak up on you since it's twice a year.

thank you SO MUCH!! We were on the phone with the breeder who had scheduled the spay for 10/24.. DH is calling him again tonight to have him push it back. Paul (the breeder) was also surprised that she came into another cycle so quickly. He said her past cycles were 6-7 mos apart. This one is about 5 He isnt concerned though. Thank goodness Daisy is a small dog. Her spotting is fairly light... I cant imagine having a large breed right now.. blehh
If I think of any other q's I'll be sure to post them.
