My dog just passed away.... what do I tell my 3 year old in the morning?
She knows the dog went to the vet... what do I tell her when she realizes she isn't coming back? I am sooo sad.

I'm so sorry for your loss
I can honestly say I've never seen my husband cry so hard as when our kitten died. I felt so empty and sad for so long myself
Still.. I am a strong believer in the truth. I wouldn't try to dumb it down or make it seem like fairy tale. Its a fact. They'll only understand what they can handle.
But that's JMHO.
Again, so sorry for your loss!

I am so sorry miki's fish died recently and we told her he was very old and he died. She was very upset (still talks about him but usually does not cry anymore)
I am all about being honest
DO NOT say he got sick and died or went to sleep

This is obviously different but my SIL passed away leaving behind my then 5 year old nephew 7 years ago...The grief counselor told my BIL that if he were to ask what happened that it should be explained to him that her body "stopped working" ( there were some other things, but that is something that stood out to me) It's almost like an answer that is just a tad too complex for them to really grasp, yet easy enough to understand I guess

I'm sorry to about your dog
When DS fish died (he had it for 6 years) I told him that he went to pet heaven to be with his mom and dad. I painted this beautiful picture of how wonderful pet heaven was and that it was ok to miss joey (his fish) and so forth. He was still sad but was happy that his fish was in a better place. Good luck

I don't know what to say - I was hoping to get some good answers on here - my SIL's dog died a few months ago - when we come to visit, SIL and her dog are a unit. She is single and her dog was her child. When we say we are visiting Aunt Judy, DS always talks about the time he will spend with Baby too. They were buddied right from the start and are inseperable when we visit
We haven't been there since Baby died, and I don't know how we are going to explain to him why she isn't there

Get this book. It's amazing. It's a children's book but it even helped me when my dog passed ( I was like 23). It is a great story and very touching.
I'm so sorry.

I'm sorry to hear about you losing your dog, however I am no help, our cat died two octobers ago and my son still asks when she is coming home from the hospital!

I agree with this advice. When my dad passed away this is what we told my son....that Pop's body stopped working and he went to live in heaven. The less abstract the better. The big thing is for him to understand, as gently as possible, that your dog isn't coming back. With my son, I told him that Pop couldn't come back to visit us, but that he can still see us. They think that he lives in the clouds with God and I told them that he has special glasses that he wears that allow him to see us. As hard as it is, they know that he can't come back. If you give them any false hope that he has just gone away for a short time or whatever, it will be very hard for your child as they will forever be waiting....
