My dog thinks the baby's room is his bathroom.
I need advice or some suggestions.
When we first got our puppy he would continually poop in the bedroom next to our's. We would give me a few smacks on the butt and yell at him. Eventually we just closed off the room (there is no door for that room yet).
We've had him for 8 months now and he's all "potty" trained. He goes outside (#1) on our walks and if we leave him for too long or are sleeping he always goes on the pad.
We re-opened the bedroom last week because we are working on it for the baby coming. He started pooping in there again! He's fully trained and I can't understand why he is pooping in that room.
Yesterday we had a new carpet put in that room. We were hoping with the new carpet and smell he would stop pooping in there. After the carpet was put down, we took him in the room and played with him and rubbed his belly and showed him it was a "fun" room. This morning I woke up and he had pooped in there again.
What is it about this one room? He's so good otherwise. How can we stop this?

I'm not really sure how to stop it if you don't catch him in the act.
There are certain scents that dogs don't like... Vinegar and certain citrus smells - maybe if the area where he goes (or the room) smells of something he doesn't like - he'll not go in the room. Otherwise, I'd keep it gated.

Thanks Emily! I will try to figure out if there are any scents he doesn't like. Although, I'm not sure if that is the case with Cosmo- he loves everything.

Colleen - where does he normally/is he supposed to poop? In my experience, when a dog pees in a room it is to mark territory, and pooping is a sign of anger/frustration/behavioral. He could sense changes that have to do with that space and is acting out. I would 100% gate the room and only allow him access with you there.

He is supposed to poop outside on our walks but he also can use the pad (its in the kitchen). He knows where he should be going and he always praise him when he does.
I guess we'll just have to block off the room. I wanted to get him used to it before the baby comes. I feel bad though, I don't want him to think I'm replacing him or I'll love him any less with the baby around.

Try using Vicks Vaporub. Dogs do not like the smell of it at all. You could put a little on the spot where he's been pooping. It will just cause him to sneeze a bit.
We did this with our dog when we wanted him to stop scratching the underside of our ottoman. It worked, but it took a couple week and we had to keep reapplying the Vicks, but it did work.

you have to stop using the pads IMO especially with a LO on the way. You don't want a toddler walking around with poops! I don't let my dog go in any of the bedrooms anymore. She's huge and hairy and I didn't want my bedroom smelling like dog anymore. Can you just block off the area?

same with vinegar.. if he keeps doing it in the same spot try using some vinegar in the area.
when i first moved into my house the previous owner had a dog who obviously used to pee on the rug.. even when we ripped the rugs out and cleaned they would still go in a certain area.. just so happened to be the room they crated the dog in.. i cleaned the floors with water & vinegar & they stopped.
