My first internal (maybe TMI) at 37 weeks
I am still so embarrassed, I just can't shake it.
I had my strep b test and had NO IDEA that it was a swab of MORE THAN ONE nether region But that was fine.
For the internal, my OB had DH hold my hand. I was a little "surprised" by how quickly and the extent of the "probing" was so I kind of squeeled/yelped- I don't know what to call it. It wasn't exactly painful, just uncomfy and a little sharp feeling at certain points. I am so embarrassed I don't know if I will be able to look at my OB again next time- we talked for a while afterwards and I was just babbling from the embarrassment of the whole thing (my "reaction".) I know I need to just get over it because labor leaves you in a much more vulnerable state than an internal, but right now I just keep getting hot inthe face when I think about it.
Anyway, end result is I survived and it was not as bad as I thought it would be pain wise, but def. more embarrassing for me than anticipated.
Also I am not at all dialated and her head is still "a little high."
He then went on to tell me to call him under 3 possible circumstances: 1) my water breaks. 2) I have period like bleeding 3) I am having contractions 5 minutes apart for an hour straight where I can't talk through them and feel like I want drugs or if my husband is bleeding (ha ha ha.)

Oh I remember that yelp - I gave my obgyn the same one when I had the GBS test and my first internal for DS. I think most women have the same reaction. I even LOLed at this and DH said what is so funny and I told DH. His response - Oh I remember that yelp too.

I have not been through an internal yet but others have told me that they have had the similar reaction that you did. I can see myself letting out a yelp too!

I go for my first internal next week - so thank you for preparing me! I had no idea the Strep was from two areas either...I just assumed it was one.

Ugh!! Im soooooo not looking forward to it!! Im sure i'll make a sound, and i dont really care about being embarassed (i dont think you should be either- i think its a natural reaction!), but... TMI... the last few times DH and i DTD, i totally felt like i was a virgin all over again I thought it was supposed to loosen up down there, not tighten?!
Glad you got through it though! And, thanks for the heads up about the butt stick- i thought it was only the front, too!

Aww-I am so sorry you felt embarrassed! Don't feel bad-I would do the same thing! I am not good with those things!
ETA-Thanks for the heads up on the butt thing-wow I am learning a lot early on. I think my OB would get whacked in the head with my foot if I didn't get a heads up on that beforehand!

Re: My first internal (maybe TMI) at 37 weeks
So I'm 25 weeks, and thinking that maybe I'll just stay pregnant. After reading this I definitely don't want to get to the point of internals....and really swab in two different places??? Why is the 2nd region even necessary???
Next kid....DH can carry it!!!

Re: My first internal (maybe TMI) at 37 weeks
you know i had heard that the test was from 2 regions so i prepared myself - and my OB only tests the vag, not the rear.
i guess all offices are different

ummm, so i'm guessing the one of the two regions isn't your vag and your mouth???
OMG I would have never thought otherwise until this post! Yikes!

Maybe different doctors do different things and not everyone will end up with a double test . . .

Re: My first internal (maybe TMI) at 37 weeks
I actually never had an internal int he OB's office with DD because I delivered when I was 36w1d but when he did it in the hospital, I yelled and said, "Jesus! What the hell are you doing up there?!" No worries, it was your first one and no one really can know what it's like until it happens to you. Hang in there. Delivery is a helluva lot worse and you will be yelling and cursing at him instead!!
