my first of many possibly stupid IUI questions!
so now that i'm gearing up for my 1st IUI cycle i'm overthinking and worrying about a million things! lol! i was wondering.....does taking the drugs and injections cancel out the way your body would normally function? meaning, since i usually ovulate on my own, will the drugs make that not happen until i trigger? is there a possibility i would still ovulate on my own and mess up all of the timing?
sorry if this is a dumb question. i have a feeling i'll have many many more

Re: my first of many possibly stupid IUI questions!
medication will control your hormones so you ovulate when the dr wants you to.....The HcG shot will trigger the release of the egg and you will ovulate after the trigger to hopefully let the sperm meet up with the egg

Re: my first of many possibly stupid IUI questions!
For my first IUI on monitoring day they detected the surge in my blood and so the Dr. said I didn't have to do the trigger shot, the next 2 mornings I went in for the insemination.
For my second IUI on monitoring day they said the surge wasn't in my blood yet but I had 2 mature eggs so at night I did the trigger shot. Then the next two mornings I went in for the insemination.
So I think people definitely would still ovulate on their own, but because the Dr is monitoring you with bloodwork and a u/s they can see the eggs growing and know when you're ready to "trigger".
Hope this helps.
ETA - I also O on my own, I get a + on OPK, a temp spike, and a distinct O pain which all coordinate at the same time with each other.

Leb, thanks for your info because I too, O on my own, OPK says I O, I get a temp spike and discharge as usual. Do I have to go on Clomid? Do I have to do a triggershot? /confused

Well I can't really answer those questions because I am pretty new to this and don't know that much! But I didn't take Clomid, I took Femara which is a similar drug to help grow and produce eggs.
I was kind of upset/confused when Dr. B first suggested an IUI but the reason(I think) for the drugs even if you O on your own is so they can time it all perfectly.
So for me I get AF, then CD2-5 (they call it CD3) you get blood work and a u/s. Then at night for 5 nights you take femara (or clomid) so your eggs start to mature. A week after the CD3 u/s you go back for CD10. They do more blood and another u/s. For me both times I went for the CD10 testing and they asked me to come back after 2 more days, then they repeated and saw mature eggs and the following 2 days I go in for an IUI.
I only took the trigger shot one time because the first IUI my blood work showed I was about to O on my own (even though the OPK didn't show this for another day).
By putting the sperm right up where the egg should be it increases your chances because they don't have to swim all the way up. It is like a step up from BD-ing.
But when I first got my CD3 blood work done I found out I had an underactive thyroid with NO symptoms, so that is mostly likely why I haven't gotten preg. I hope that helps!
ETA - If I am incorrect with anything someone please correct me, this is just what I have learned along the way.

Re: my first of many possibly stupid IUI questions!
My dr had me use the ovulation sticks and if I hadn't ovulated by the time the eggs were ready then I did the shot
Good luck!

The clomid helps with egg production
I hate Clomid, gave me terrible hot flashes

I O on my own as well. My doctor did put me on clomid for my IUI because the clomid will help produce more follicles, so if there are more follicles there is a better chance the sperm will fertilize one of them. I did have the option of doing an unmedicated IUI, but because of some sperm issues we opted to go with the medicated IUI.
As for the triggering my doc had me use the ovulation kits. I surged on my own and did the IUI the day after my surge. I asked her about triggering and she prefers using the ovulations kits.
I'm currently in my 2ww. . . hopefully it worked! HTH

Re: my first of many possibly stupid IUI questions!
I O on my own normally. On meds, everything just happens a bit quicker because it's controlled and stimulated. I normally o on cd 15/16 without meds but on cd12 with meds and trigger because the follies are mature at cd10. I've never tried a cycle without trigger so idk if I'd still o on cd12 or not.
They explained it to me as clomid/trigger/iui is just ensuring everything is in the right place at the right time.
It won't mess up your cycle permanently though. When I took a month off, I went back to o on cd 16.
Good luck!
