My foundation always looks cakey! - Updated!!
Right now I'm using Nars. previously I used Makeup Forever HD. I hate both. They look so cakey and my pores look terrible. I'm starting to think it may not be the foundation and possibly something I'm doing wrong during application. What tips do you have for making your foundation look natural and flawless?

Do you use a primer? I found that helps on my skin.

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
I find that any foundation that is heavier than a BB cream (and even certain BB creams) looks awful on my skin. I chalk it up to having bad skin and very large pores. I use Garnier BB cream and then a dusting of Bare Minerals original foundation over it and it always looks natural and flawless and more importantly, not cakey at all.

The foundation formula itself sounds like it is too thick. Or it is the wrong formula for your skin type. Are you setting the foundation with powder?
I do not use liquid foundation for this reason, even with a primer. It settles and looks cakey and oily.
I would suggest switching to a lighter formula liquid foundation - like UD Naked Skin Weightless foundation or even a mineral foundation. If you use a liquid, you must use a Beauty Blender sponge - it will make the application totally flawless. If you use powder, definitely use a kabuki brush. Tarte Amazonian Clay is a good foundation if you need full coverage. And always lightly set liquid foundation with a floofing of pressed powder.

I would use a thinner foundation. I use even better by Clinique and took me a while to find a foundation that looked as good as this one.

When I'm not using a CC cream I: Moisturize, prime, apply foundation & set with powder.

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
Thanks ladies! I'm down to the last drop of foundation so I'm going to get a thinner one and a beauty blender and see how that works!

Are you using foundation to just even out your skin tone? If so, mix it with youir daily moisturizer .....just in your hands and then put it on like you would your regular moisturizer, and down your neck.....it's like a make your own BB cream. - I found that to work MUCH better for me than the BB cream alone which seemed to be drying, and I could never find the right tint. - and it's a no brainder application and blend
I use Armani foundation and Keihls moisturizer (Rosa Artica or soemthing like that)

I don't have pimples or blemishes that I'm trying to cover, however I have areas of red/blotchy skin, so I guess I'm using it to even out my skin tone. I like the look of glowing/flawless skin. I also use highlighter and bronzer to contour along with my foundation.
My pores ALWAYS look clogged. I use a face cleanser every night but I have to say, I don't feel like it's getting the makeup out of my pores. I'm wondering if that's why my foundation is cakey.

You should use a daily exfoliater with BHA. I started using Paula's Choice- she makes one that is awesome. I use it morning and night and it really keeps the pores unclogged and even shrinks them and evens out your skin tone.

For your pores look at Benefit Pore fessional - it blurs fine lines and pores. You can use it as a primer as well.

I find my make up goes on much better when I use my clarisonic to wash my face, followed wit this (I use the lotion version.) Clay masks also help unclog pores.
Also, you may also be using too much make up, or your primer & your makeup don't work well together.
I have use MUFE HD & didn't find it to be heavy or cakey. I only stopped b/c it wasn't long wearing on me.
Also, if you use powder, make sure your make up is set before you put it on & only use a little.

I do the same. Garnier BB cream--oil free--and Bare Minerals Original over it. I love the look

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
If you are using it to even out skin tone, you are not using the right product.
1. moisturizer with an SPF 2. Primer (silicone to silicone, water to water, if you mix the base active ingredient between the primer and the foundation, the foundation will bead or flake) 3. Corrector (green for blue, purple for red, peach for under eyes). 4. Concealer if you need it 5. Foundation 6. Powder 7. Blush
How much foundation are you applying? It should be less than 1/2 a dime in total.
To apply I like to use my fingers then I buff it in a circular pattern with the real techniques buffing brush or with a damp beauty blender I apply it all over my face.
What make up remover do you use? Lancôme makes the best make up remover. You will need a cotton ball but it gets everything off.

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
also, have you gently exfoliated?
i started using the olay take on the clarisonic and it drastically improved my skin. i just use it at night with my cleanser and it really does a great job at sloughing away the dead skin cells that you never knew were there! your skin will be much smoother and makeup will look better.

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
I don't have the best skin and had the same problems with foundation. I've been absolutely loving Estee Lauder Double Wear BB Cream. I've tried all of the BB Creams (the more expensive ones too) and the Estee Lauder one is fantastic. It has crazy good coverage (I would say as much as foundation) and it doesn't get cakey. I use a little mineral powder afterwards too...
Also...don't laugh...I swear by the Freeman Pull-Off Cucumber Mask. I get it at Stop N Shop for about $4. I slather it on at night, let it dry and then peel. I feel like it exfoliates and really unclogs everything...kind of like a big Biore pad lol.

Yes, but I use the Real Techniques one for a 1/4 of the price of the beauty blender.
A primer will help and also don't over powder after you apply the foundation.

Moisturize. Your base needs to be ready. You can use primer, BB creams, whatever. If your skin is dry it wont matter what you use.

Re: My foundation always looks cakey!
UPDATE: Thanks for all the tips! So this past weekend I went out and got a good exfoliator, a new moisturizer, the beauty blender, and the Urban Decay foundation. I've been using the exfoliator everyday along with the moisturizer and it's made a HUGE difference in the appearance of my skin. The beauty blender also made a big difference and my makeup looks SO much better. Not cakey at all!

exofoliate every other day so you dont dry out your skin, esp in the cold weather. Also...Philosophy Microdermobrasion Face Wash is amazing along with Purity (Purity use to wash your makeup off at night and the other one in the morning, it has exfoliants in it but not harsh)

Re: My foundation always looks cakey! - Updated!!
Can anyone recommend a good moisturizer to use after exfoliating? Its definitely making a BIG difference with my pores and smoothing out my skin but I can tell it's going to dry me out a bit. I usually use a very basic, supermarket/drugstore moisturizer but I want something that isn't going to re-clog those pores.
