My fourth postpartum surgery- A Long Kelly Story
The surgery itself seems to be a success, but many other things happened along the way that I thought I'd share with you. They were ready to bring me down to the surgical floor when they realized that the dr never had me sign a consent. So we were delayed. The nurse upstairs tried to start an IV, but couldn't. She said the anesthesiologist would need to start it.
We finally get down to the surgical floor and DH is standing there next to my bed. A worker asked him if he would like a chair to sit on. So the worker pulls the chair off a stack of chairs and hands it to DH. DH sits down next to me and appears to snuggle in to say nice things to me. He leans in and whispers............
"He clipped my balls with the chair"
I really needed that laugh at that time!!!!!!
The anesthesiologist comes down to start my IV. He has some trouble, then gets a line started. Then I feel warm liquid on my hand and hear him say 'OOPS!' Didn't work. He decided to try to relax me with laughing gas in the OR, while trying to start an IV. After 30 MINUTES in the oeprating room (no kidding, the nurses kept time), numerous attempts to get an IV in, he finally found a spot. Come to find out that most of my good veins have so much scarring that they can't get in them well anymore.
I was then put under. I woke up in an absolute panic, with doctors and nurses running around. I realized I was still in the OPERATING ROOM!!!!!! I completely freaked. One of the nurses just starts screaming 'You need to relax!!!' I'm sure you screaming at me will help me relax. I guess my blood pressure was shooting through the roof.
They told me later that because I am asthmatic, they try to keep the breathing tube in as long as possible. I just happened to wake up before they took it out and had no idea what was going on. I just expected to wake up in recovery.
I was given a prescription for pain meds. On the way home from the hospital, DH ran into the pharmacy to drop it off. The pharmacy wouldn't take it because something wasn't written in properly. I called the hospital to see if they could call the pharmacy to take care of it. The hospital said they COULDN'T do it over the phone. They said we could come back tot he hospital to get another script. WHAT!??!?!?!
By this point, DS had fallen asleep in his crib, so I thought I could be safe if DH ran back to the hospital. (Maybe we'd even try to call the emergency babysitter) The hospital said that DH couldn't pick it up, that I had to pick it up myself.
I won't even go into all the details of this, but the hospital refused to help and wouldn't contact my doctor. After nearly 24 hours after surgery, I got my pain meds. It's not like I had a tooth removed, I had an ORGAN removed and no pain management!!!!!!!!!!!!
The area that did my surgery hasn't even apologized and the nurse that called me today to see how I was told me to contact the dept that deals with patient relations. Something went wrong here.
Thanks for reading this. Many areas of my body are badly bruised from where they tried getting IVs in. And poor DS doesn't know why I can't pick him up. I am so sad. I'm going to rest now.

Wow Kelly! What a day! I am livid for you that the hospital was unwilling to help you and you had to go back to get the prescription
Thankfully it's over and everything goes smoothly while you heal

Wow, shame on that hospital for putting you through that...
But I did have to laugh at your DH's comment with the chair... That really made me chuckle.

Re: My fourth postpartum surgery- A Long Kelly Story
Believe me when I say I KNOW what you are feeling and going through!! It takes them forever (about 6 tries ) to get an IV into me too! It's like being a human pin cushion!
FM me if you need ANYTHING! It was only 3 months ago for me and I remember it ALL! I have never felt better now - so know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Feel better!
