Re: My grandmother passed away
You shouldn't feel forced to go, but you also shouldn't feel forced to stay away. Whatever you choose, you're in my thoughts.

Re: My grandmother passed away
I'm sorry for your loss and for the family drama surrounding the funeral. I think if you had a relationship with your grandmother and can stomach your dad for a short while I would go.

Jen, first I am terribly sorry for your loss.
When my father passed away, the Rabbi told us that funerals are not for the people who have died, but rather for the people they have left behind. She was YOUR grandmother and if you had a decent relationship with her, then YOU deserve comfort as well. I hope this sheds some light for you.

Yeah, I feel like we have every right to be there, but now my mom and sister don't want to go, and I really don't want to go alone
I used to see my grandma all the time, she lived very close by, 2 years ago my uncle took her to a nursing home in PA and we hadn''t seen her since before my dad left, since all visitors had to go through my uncle, who is eeeevil. I really wanted to visit her. Even when we did visit her once, my uncle tried to whisk us away and I had to actually argue with him and say "No. No offense, but i didn't drive 3 hours to go out to lunch, see the library or anything else, I came to spend more than 10 minutes with my grandmother. So you can go wherever you'd like, but I'm staying here" he didn't like that, and that was before my dad left and we stopped having contact with the family.
The real joke in ths is that we still keep in touch with exactly one couple in my dad's family, his cousin and wife, and we spoke with them today, and they said they didn't call us because they assumed someone would have ahd the decency to let the grandchildren know. apparently not.
I'm just feeling a lot more anger than sadness right now.

Re: My grandmother passed away
so sorry Jenn..is your sister attending? maybe there is safety in numbers?
I would go...you did not ever do anything wrong, your dad is to blame, he should be the one in hiding.

That's exactly how I feel. I hoenstly don't care what they think or say. I'm completely in the right here. But my mom and sister are less prone to confrontation. I honestly don't care what they say, think , or feel about my being there. That's my grandmother.
