My Gyno just called me..
and I tested postive for HPV. My doctor told me not to worry and I have read a past thread on here that it's very common but of course I am sitting here a nervous wreck!!! She told me that instead of coming every year that I have to come in every 6 months for a pap. Should I be nervous or is this really common in women? TIA

Re: My Gyno just called me..
over 50% of women have it
it sounds alarming at first, but as long as you stay on top of your paps, they will make sure there are no irregular cell changes, and if there are it will be taken care of quickly.
dont be scared...its VERY common

Re: My Gyno just called me..
Common...at least from what I have heard as well.
I have dealt w/the same experience(on and off for 5 yrs)...I come back, get futher tests...they tell me its mild and to come back. I go every 6 months and knock on wood, my paps have been clear for the past yr.
ETA: Something I found: Did you know that cervical cancer is caused by certain types of a common virus? It’s a virus we should all be concerned about—it’s called human papillomavirus (HPV). And even though HPV is really common, many people don’t know they have it because there often are no signs or symptoms. For most women, HPV clears on its own. But for some, cervical cancer and other consequences can develop.
This site will help too:

Re: My Gyno just called me..
Very common.
I deal with it also. Keep up with your doctor's appointments. You'll be fine.
I read somewhere that by the age of 50 over 70% of women will have dealt with it.

Re: My Gyno just called me..
It's common! I got that call myself just a month ago. I'm actually sitting at my desk with my cell phone inches from my hand, waiting for my gyn to call me back right now.

Re: My Gyno just called me..
I'm sure it'll be okay! I have a question, though, as HPV has always confused me even though I make sure my pap test includes the check for it (thin pap prep). Is it an STD, or no? Or something that just develops?
Doh! It's actually called ThinPrep Pap

Me, too. Commercials make it sound like something you just get....I don't mean any harm; I'm just wondering for my own edification.

Re: My Gyno just called me..
How do you get HPV?
The types of HPV that cause genital warts, abnormal cervical cells (dysplasia) and/or cervical cancer are spread from person to person through sex or intimate skin-to-skin (genital) contact. Condoms provide some protection; however, they cannot prevent infection completely, because they do not cover all areas of the genital region.
It is important to know that while having more than one sexual partner may increase the risk of getting HPV, it is possible to get the virus from just one person. In fact, it is estimated that 8 of 10 women will catch the virus at some time by the age of 50.
It also is important to remember that even women who have had only one sexual partner for many years need to be screened for abnormal cells that can turn into cervical cancer. This is because HPV may remain dormant in the cervical cells for a long period and not be detected. If this occurs, the virus is inactive and thus won't cause any problems - unless it activates, perhaps due to changes in your body's immune system. It is impossible to determine exactly when you acquired an HPV infection or how long you have been infected.

Yes, I was going to answer that too.
Human papillomavirus is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different strains or types. Not all strains are considered an STD.
Genital HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

Thanks. Ah--so it can be dormant for years. I'd imagine your DH should be checked then, too.

My doc said I could have had this for yrs-they can not determine when exactly you get it..just have to follow up eevry 6 months for a pap rather than a year.

unfortunately there is no kind of test for guys - thats whats scary. guys cant be tested. not through blood or even through a sample of some kind. =========
At the moment, there is no test approved to detect HPV in men. However, there are ways to detect the most common problem caused by HPV in men, genital warts. Genital warts are usually diagnosed by visual inspection. Some health care providers may use a vinegar solution to help identify flat warts, although this test is not specific for warts. That means the test may falsely identify normal skin as a wart.
There are currently no tests approved to detect early evidence of HPV-associated cancers in men, as there are for women (Pap tests). Nonetheless, since anal cancer is more common in gay, bisexual, and HIV-positive men, some experts recommend routine anal Pap tests for those populations. The anal Pap test is used to find abnormal cells in the anus (caused by HPV) that could turn into cancer over time. However, it is not yet clear that finding and removing abnormal cells from the anus will effectively prevent anal cancer from developing in the future. CDC does not recommend anal cancer screening.
