My Heart is Breaking today...
No surprise I guess. My XH and my youngest DD (baby of the family with 6 siblings) has taken his lack of parenting for years. He automatically thinks that the kids should be the ones to reach out to him always
Jackie was 4 when he left and he never tried to have bond where he had to make the effort. He was never there for her and in the last few years we have tried to help her get to know him on her terms.
She and my other DD planned a Father's Day Brunch today. He knew about it for weeks and I even called him and talked to him about it. SHe would never show how much it hurts her that he has a relationship with the older kids now, but I know she cares.
I just got told by her that he cancelled it
thru my older DD last night.  I know she is
upset but trying not to show it.
I had to go outside and cry. I also have a call into him. He has his phone set on VM.
ETA: The only reason any of our kids speak to him is because of me. I raised them all! THe older ones are NOT getting together with him this weekend either due to where they live now.

i'm so very sorry especially for your daughter. he may not know it now but he'll live to regret his actions. i had a cousin just like him. when he walked out on his wife and 5 children the youngest was only a toddler. he had very minimal contact with any of his children but none with the youngest. one day many years later he spotted some of his children in the neighborhood. they talked to him and then he asked his daughter if the boy with her was her son. she said no, he's yours. he almost fell over. he tried having contact with his children from that point on but none of them wanted anything to do with him. he died a lonely man and frankly he deserved it.

 I just don't get how anyone can do this to their kids.

I've been there with my dad, and honestly maybe it's for the best. She needs to see what he really is, and not have a vision of what her relationship with him could be like. The sooner she learns how selfish he really is, the sooner she can move on and work on coming to peace with not having him in her life.

SHe already knows what he is about. I try to tell my older DD that her sister is entitled to form her own opinions without the added guilt her sister and father throws on her.

That is so terrible.. and I can relate.. I didn't have much of a relationship with my father growing up and it was so hard on me..
Keep being supportive of her.. As long as you are there for her that's going to be important to her as well..

My father (and I use that term loosely) is like this..he has 5 daughters..2 of them dont speak to him at all (Im one of them) and the other 3 tolerate him in small increments. He is a user and has used every woman in his life....Let's put it this way 5 daughters and he's never walked a single one of us down the aisle.(and some of us have been married more than once  )
He has never tried to mend the fences with any of us. He feels that we should do for him and if we dont like it I guess that's just tough...
I buy my mother a card every year for Father's Day...

For years when Jackie played Junior Olympic Travel Softball I always got a Happy MoFa's Day from the other parents on Father's Day.

Your X sounds like a real lame-o. He should have never cancelled and if it were absolutely necessary and warranted he should have called your youngest himself with the explanation.
Thank goodness your DC have such a generous, kind, caring mother to make up for the lack of father!
