My Homebirth Story

At around 11 a.m. I started to feel mild contractions. I went about my day, doing laundry, mopping the floor, etc. Then at around 12:30 they got really intense. I called my midwife and told her to come over because I knew I was in labor. DH started to set up the birthing pool and I rocked on the birthing ball. The contractions were about 5 minutes apart at that point.

My midwife got to the house at 1:30. She set up all of her supplies and helped my DH get everything ready. Her assistant came shortly after and helped me through the contractions. They weren't that bad, I was able to laugh and talk in between them. I decided to eat something so I could keep my energy up and I felt so good afterwards! Around 2 I asked her to check me and I was 6 cm and 100% effaced.

I labored on the birthing ball until around 4 when I asked to go in the pool. It felt like HEAVEN! The contractions were coming at every 3 minutes at that point, but I barely noticed them. The water helped so much, I still felt normal. I was talking, laughing, and barely noticed each contraction. I got out of the pool around 5 to go to the bathroom and thats when the contractions really intensified. My midwife checked me before I got back in the pool and I was 9cm.

After that I entered into another world. My contractions were right on top of each other and were very painful. The one thing I did that helped tremendously was to sleep in between the contractions. If you're attempting a natural birth, try to sleep in between. I think thats what helped me have the energy to push.

At 5:45 I felt the urge to push. I tried several different positions in the birthing pool but couldn't find one that worked. My midwife suggested the birthing stool and I decided to try it. They set it up against the bed and DH sat so he could support me. They helped me out of the pool and once I sat down the baby's head descended pretty quickly. I wrapped my arms around DH and really started pushing at 6:10. Our little boy was born at 6:18 p.m. He weighed 8lb 8oz and was 20 inches long. He has a full head of hair and blue eyes. He started nursing right away, and has been doing great with it.

I'm so happy I decided to homebirth this time. I've never felt better after giving birth, and it was such a great experience. If we were to have another baby, I wouldn't think twice about doing it again.
