My interesting story last night - In two parts
I had somewhat of an interesting night last night... which happened in two parts. I'll post part one here.
I finished my DJing shift last night at 11pm in Times Square. Hailed a cab to take me to my monthly parking garage on the east side.
What do I find in the back seat of the cab? Some woman's purse!
So I open it up to see whats in there and I find the following:
- About $280 buks - CASH in 20s - a cellphone - A Nevada drivers licence (a 69 year old woman) - A Sheraton Hotel access card - Some pills in a bag - A Medicaid card - some other miscellaneous junk
That was the major stuff... so I was like holy shyt this woman must be freaking out. I said to myself there is no way I could just take this crap for myself... so I figured I would try to find this person.
Well the first thing I did to see if her phone was unlocked and it was. I checked the voicemail on it to see if there were any messages from her. There was only one old saved message from her granddaughter asking to go shopping. She left her number so I wrote it down.
I was tired so I drove home... i figured I would try to locate her from home and deal with this tomorrow. When I got home... i decided to call the granddaughter... and I explained the situation and gave them my number and they were able to contact her at the hotel and she got in touch with me.
Well the husband called me at 12:30 last night asking me if there was ANY way I could meet up with them to give the purse back cause they were catching a flight in the morning. He said he would give me a "reward"... bla bla.
I figured there was no way in hell she would get by airport security without her licence so since I offered to return the purse back... I had to hi-tail it back into Manhattan to meet her to give it back.
Long story short... she was estatic about getting it back... thanked me over and over. She even handed me $200 buks for my efforts which I was very surprised. I didn't end up getting home till after 2am last night and I had to work this morning. I am quite sleepy today.
But its not bad I suppose. I felt good knowing she got her stuff back. Good karma goes a long way I guess.
The hotel she was saying at was four blocks away from my bar where I got the cab. I might have gotten in the cab right after she got out.
I told her to tell all her folks in Nevada that not all NYC people are rude and arrogant.

You're a good man Pill. If I left my bag in a cab...I wouldn't care about the contents...just Puhleez give me back my Coach!!! The $200 weren't bad either.
My mom lost her bag in the mall a few years back during the holidays w/ $1000 cash in the bag. The person who found it gave it to security held on to it & all the money was in the bag! Talk about the holiday spirit!

Kudos to you! And it was nice that you got a reward. That was very nice of them and she is very lucky that someone like you founded. Some other people would probably have kept the $$$ and throw away the purse or who knows what. You said you were able to retrieve messages from her cell phone. It didn't ask you for a code? In order to retrieve my messages, you will need to type my password. Well, glad that there was a happy ending to this story and that's so true about Karma...what goes around....DEFINITELY comes around.....

Re: My interesting story last night - In two parts
As far as part two goes... this one still irks me today.
As I was driving back into the city to meet this woman to give her purse back (this is around 1:15am).... I get off the 59th street bridge and start heading south on 2nd avenue right by my job.
At 2nd avenue and 58th street... I have the green light to straight down 2nd. Some jacka$$ in a white SUV decides to make some BONEHEAD move and make a left turn all the way from the right lane to try to get onto the upper level of the 59th bridge.
This move was just sooooo stupid... its even impossible to explain. Lets just say 2nd avenue is a four lane street. This SUV is in the far right lane... and he tries to make a left turn from his right lane.
Well a cab about four car lengths in front of me hits him. What does the SUV do? It continues to go and starts to go up the ramp to get onto the bridge to head back into queens!
A hit and run in progress! W-T-F!!!
I had my wife in the car... and i sooooooooo wanted to follow this SUV cause I had quick instincts and saw this whole thing go down while it was happening.
But I knew it would freak her out totally so i sat and watched this guy get away.
I did immediately call 911 and reported it. I tried to get them to put cops at both exits of the upper level on the Queens side to look out for this white SUV with a big dent on its rear quarter panel.
I kept going and gave the woman her purse. I decided to go back home the way i came cause I wanted to pass by the cross-section where this happened to see if this SUV did stop.
Well.. long story short... he got away. Cops were there finishing a report for the cabbie. I gave the cops my business card if they needed me to give a statement for the cabbie's insurance.
Totally suks! Man I wanted to tail that SUV soooooo bad. Still ****** about it. I hate people like that. He was probably drunk driving and I could have screwed him so bad. Oh well.
Interesting night nonetheless!

Yeah... this is the one advantage of NOT having security codes on your cellphone. Either to make calls or to get VM. My cellphone you don't need a code to get the VM if I call VM from the phone itself.
If I call from an outside phone to get my VM... i need to enter my code.
I actually spoke to the husband (Dr So-and so). He said over the phone he would give me $100. But the money wasn't that big a deal... i get paid enough. But I could tell this woman was "well-off". The money wasn't an issue and when I got there she was like "I am going to give you more than my husband promised". LOL
I didn't mind.

Thats what my wife said.
I told her wasn't stupid I wasn't going to "tail the guy". I would have kept plenty a distance (at least 7-8 car lengths)... just enough to be on the phone with the cops to tell them where he is driving.

I agree with that. You definitely do not want to follow anyone. Next time, if you are able to get the plate, that's even better. If you were able to give that to the police, they will be able to catch this person easier.

I unfortunately couldn't get the plate because the cabbie t-boned him. All I saw was the side of the truck. I really thought he was going to stop... at least on the ramp.
And after my wife's car accident.... godforbid I take my eyes off the road for a split second or talk on the phone while driving and she freaks and bitches me out.
Yet it wasn't me who totalled a 26k truck. My driving skills are fine.

That was so great of you!!! Not only to call and let her know her purse was not lost, but to then drive back into the city was so wonderful of you!
Sounds like you had one heck of a night though. My sister actually was trying to follow a car where the driver was waving a gun at another car and she stayed on the phone with 911 while trying to follow in a safe distance. Turns out the guy was a rookie cop who was experiencing road rage.

DJ Pill- Doer of good deeds!!!
That is so wonderful that you returned the lady's purse- especially going out of your way so late.
And just focus on karma- that a-hole will get what he deserves!!! Maybe they have cameras so they can track his license #.
You can only serve so much justice in one night
