My kids bombed the standardized test

I teach in NC, and we have 3 End-of-Grade tests (EOGs) that the kids take in 5th grade: Math, Science and Reading.

As a Literacy Specialist, I focused my efforts with my kids mostly on math and science...and they did really well.

But we just got the reading scores back, and only 45% of my class passed it.

I'm so upset...every time we'd do the practice exams and practice the skills, the kids did really well. I was so confident about the scores.

Luckily, I have an AWESOME principal who told me not to freak out, because it's my first year in the state, first year teaching 5th grade, and I had a lower percentage of gifted and talented kids than most of the other classes.

But I still can't help but feel like I failed them somehow. I hate these stupid tests.

The EOG's SUCK!!!! i taught 3rd grade in NC for 2 years, so I only had the Reading, and Math but I remember feeling like such a failure my 1st year when about 35% failed the reading! My principal had to keep reminding me that although they failed, they had tremendous growth (many came to me on a kindergarten reading level). Theres only so much you can do! Don't be so hard on yourself!!! And if where you are is anything like where I was, the complete and total lack of parental support doesn;t help the cause much!
