my little guy has blood in his stool- any BTDT moms?
My 3 week old has had blood in his stool 4-5 times the past 3 days- took him to the ped today and she didn't see any fissures and his stomach felt soft- so she switched him to soy-based formula.
anyone's DC have this and have success on soy vs. the hypoallergenic formula?

My friend's baby just had this at around the same age, and it was a milk alergy, their ped also switched her soy..

hmmm...The blood in Chloes indicated a milk protein allergy. Has he been gassy, spitting up, uncomfotable? Obviously with an allergy there are addtional signs.
I would see a Ped GI for that, not my regular Ped though.

Re: my little guy has blood in his stool- any BTDT moms?
My DS has had it since he was 2 weeks old. He has a severe milk protein/soy allergy. He is on a specialized formula now. I will find out on Monday if he still has blood in his stool. My GI says that it can take up to 2 weeks for his system to get adjusted to it. So far most of his symptoms have subsided. Thank goodness. My reg pedi originally diagnosed it. After 2 formula changes, we went to the pedi GI. She too tested his stool and saw the same thing.

My DS has a milk & soy allergy and had blood in his poop. I'm not sure about the formula because I BF, but the blood didn't go away until I eliminated both dairy and soy from my diet. Initially I just tried the dairy but he still had blood. I know that my GI doctor goes right to the hypoallergenic formula because over 50% of babies with dairy intolerances/allergies can't tolerate soy either.

he doesn't really spit up, and isnt that fussy- but he takes very forceful poops... they are very loud when they come out... he sleeps very well- no colic.

Re: my little guy has blood in his stool- any BTDT moms?
Ped Dietitian here:
DO NOT GIVE SOY FORMULA! AAP does not recommend soy formula and here is the reason why:
When their is a potential milk pro allergy (which is most likely what is going on b/c of the blood in the stool) the gut membranes become permeable from the damage to the gut mucousa. Introducing soy formula allows the soy proteins to cross over the gut membranes and go directly into the blood stream - therefore causing a potential soy protein allergy.
The recommendation is to go directly to a hypoallergenic formula if it is a potential milk pro allergy.
There are 2 things you can do: I would of course recommend going directly to nutramigen w/enflora lgg or the regular nutramigen. The enflora one contains the probiotic lactobacillius gg to help heal gut. Works amazingly well. However, if you want to try something before I would go with Gentlease. Gentlease is in between regular formula and hypoallergenic. The proteins are partially hydrolyzed (nutramigen is complete hydrolyzed) which may be enough to not illicit allergic response. It is the only product on the market like this (Similac sensative is intact(whole) proteins and lactose free). However, a true allergy will need to go to complete hydrolyzed proteins.
HTH!!

DS was put on Gentlease at about 2 weeks old. That didn't work. So he was put on Nutramigen. Was working for his symptoms but there was still a lot of blood in his stools. So he was then put on Alumentum. He had a severe reaction to it. He was then put on Elecare. Has been working really well... We never tried soy...But I know of a lot of babies that are on it.

Mine was the same way, not particularly fussy but had blood in his stool and horrible diarrhea - very watery 8-10 times a day. We switched to soy and he was a different baby after about 5 days. It's been almost three weeks now and he's doing great.

Yael often has blood in her stool - at some point, she DID have a fissure, but that's gone by now so we're stumped. I suspect it's a dairy allergy but won't know for sure until we see the GI specialist next week

Re: my little guy has blood in his stool- any BTDT moms?
great. now I'm completely stumped as to what to do w/ the soy.. he's only been on it since yesterday afternoon- the consistency of his BM has changed.. but it isn't runny- more like a thin paste- no blood though..
I did some reading up on soy and it seems like there are 2 schools here- and I do know quite a few kids that were on soy that are fine and perfectly healthy children now...
yikes... parenting can be so rough sometimes.

You have to do what your Mommy's intuition tells you. I always found that to be the best advice.

Re: my little guy has blood in his stool- any BTDT moms?
My dd had invisible blood in her stool and was diagnosed with a milk protien allergy. We skipped right over soy formula. We tried alimentum but on that she still had the blood, so we ended up on neocate (prescription amino acid based formula) and the blood finally went away.
