My Little Man can't seem to catch a break (long)...

DS is 9 months old and is prone to ear infections when he gets a cold. Almost 2 weeks ago, he was very tired all the time and just not his usual happy self and was coughing a lot. We took him to the doctor and sure enough, he had another ear infection. His 8th one. The ped put him on an antibiotic which he was on for 10 days. This past Sunday was the last day.

That day, he's still not himself and is running a lowgrade temp and still coughing so on Monday, I take him back to the doctor. The antibiotic didn't do it's job and he still has an ear infection in his left ear. On top of that, he has a sinus infection. I didn't even know infants could GET sinus infections! So now he's on a Z-pack and cough medicine and has to go for allergy testing because they're not sure if all of this is being compounded by allergies. DH is allergic to almost everything (dust, dander, pollen, etc, etc, etc). So in about 2 weeks, I have to take him to get his blood drawn for allergy testing. I'm not even sure where to take him because I've never had a good experience at LabCorp or any of the usual labs.

DH is just as frustrated as I am so on 4/28, we're taking DS to a an ENT in hopes he can shed some light on what is going on.

I was reading yesterday that they've discovered there are strains of ear infections which are resistant to FDA approved antibiotics. Now I'm worried that is what is going on with him.

He's only 9 months old and I feel so bad for him. He is such a sweet little guy and it breaks my heart to see him going through this. I just want to make him better but can't and it's killing me. Chat Icon

Thanks for letting me vent. Any advice is appreciated.

poor little guy, I'm sorry he's sick.

Where did you read about the FDA thing? DS has been fighting an ear infection for 6 weeks now (it keeps coming back and that is assuming it even ever went away). They just put him on augmentin for two weeks to see what that does. He's almost 9 months.

Hopefully the ent can shed some light for you. Are they talking about tubes yet?

I read the FDA thing on WebMD. If you do a search on ear infections in children and infants, it comes up.

DS was on augmentin for 2 of his ear infections. Then he was on another one (began with a C and I can't remember the name right now). Now he's on the Z-pack.
They haven't talked about tubes yet but I'm sure that's going to be a topic if he gets another one. That is part of the reason we're taking him to a specialist and doing the allergy testing to see if there are any other contributing factors. None of the other kids in his daycare get sick this often and our home is superclean.

I hope your little one feels better soon, too. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You should ask about tubes. I had them numerous times as a child and my friend's daughter just got them and is like a different kid.

thanks, I'm going to do a search for it.

They told me that they're going to watch him through the summer and if he gets at least 1 a month he will go for tubes. DH has bad allergies but doctor doesn't seem to think it is an issue for DS(at least not yet).

It's so frustrating/sad for the little guysChat Icon

Aw, poor thing. My friend's son is going through a similar thing--he may need tubes although they're going to try one more medication first. I hope you guys get some answers!!

Awwww T, I'm sooo sorry. I can't imagine how it is to watch him suffer through this time & time again. Gracelyn was sick w/ a "chest" cough & on the z-pack last week (we were sick too) & it broke my heart to hear her cough & see her in so much discomfort.

I think an ENT is the way to go...as a baby/child I had major ear infections & ended up w/ the tubes too & it made me so much better.

So sorry that your little man is going through this!

A woman in my daycare recently pulled her son out becuse he was getting too many ear infections and they wanted to try to remove him from so much exposure. I'm not sure if I heard/understood her correctly but she mentioned something about a test to see if it was viral or bacteria??? Is that something you will look into?

Re: My Little Man can't seem to catch a break (long)...

Hi I ent through this from Jan 29 until 2 weeks ago..GAvin had an ear infection for 2 months straight..he was on Augmenton for it. We finally say an ENT and they said tubes. Good thing we did becaues the liquid in his ear was no longer liquid it was like goop and no antibiotic would of helped. His ear is still draining 2 weeks later. We go on Friday for a recheck..We also went to an allergy/asthma specialist for his wheezing. They have him on Flovent and Abuteral and hopefully the ears will make the wheeze go away. GAvin is also almost 9 months..it so sucks!!!

The ENT mentioned something to my husband about a test that can determine the cause. Not sure if it's the same thing or not. I just wish they'd find the thing that will make him better so he can stop being so uncomfortable. Chat Icon

This is what I'm afraid of with regards to going to the ENT. Hopefully he won't need tubes but if he does, it's good to know it really does make it better. What is the procedure like for the tubes? Is he awake during?

Re: My Little Man can't seem to catch a break (long)...

Children are becoming immune to antibiotics for ear infections b/c they are being overused...not all ear infections require antibiotics, some are capable of clearing on their own. After a certain number of ear infection in a certain period of time, usually 4 ear infections in a 6 months time frame, you should see an ENT not a general dr.
I think you need to take DS to an ENT ASAP...I am actually surprised your ped. hasn't sent you to one already.

I get so frustrated when I see posts like this where peds. just keep prescribing meds that aren't working. I had a hearing problem when I was little due to constant severe ear infections which in turn caused me to have a speech problem. The same thing, even 25 years ago...the ped. just kept prescribing different antibiotics. Finally my mother took it into her own hands and took me to an ENT while my ped. told her it wasn't necessary.

Like I said, your DS needs to go to a ENT ASAP!!!
