My mantle needs help! (pics) UPDATE
I've been having a heck of a time trying to figure out what my mantle needs. I have our wedding pic mounted above it, but I need something on either side of it. Our room is a green color (its a warm earth-tone green), our furniture is light. We have a few brownish colored candles and other accents in the room. I'm going for a traditional/tuscan look in the room. Here are a few pics of the fireplace and the room right now:
what does it need??
ETA: also, does it need something on the floor of the fireplace?
Update: Thanks everyone! I took a lot of your suggestions and made a few changes to the mantle and the area right around the fireplace. I already LOVE how its coming alone. I just have to grab a fireplace screen and then I'll post pics of everything!

Hey, honestly not sure what to say about the mantle but for the floor in front of the fireplace you could put a floor vase. I will post some pics of mine.
By the way your room looks really great!!!!!!!!!!!
ETA: more floor vases in my dining room under New House Pics in my album.

I like it as is! But if you really want to add more maybe some sort of a decorative candle, and take away the two you have up there

I added on to my other fireplace. It's not to decorative but made a huge difference. I think it would look great.

very nice! i love both your fireplaces. Hmmm...I think I'm going to go for the screen -- it looks like it just adds a touch of decor to the room.

I always use the rule of three or five...that is put three or five similar things on the mantle. Try three candlesticks bunched together on one side and two decorative items on the other.

Re: My mantle needs help! (pics)
Definitely a screen-you can even get nice ones in Target. Also I would do something taller on one side and maybe a small grouping on the other

Re: My mantle needs help! (pics)
I would definitely add the screen. And maybe 2 tall floor vases on either side to hide the outlets?

Re: My mantle needs help! (pics)
you need to add some height. a grouping (3) of pillars, lanterns, decorative objects, bowl, glass vases filled with decorative balls, topiaries etc. mix the groupings.
move the wedding picture to over the couch and flank with the 2 verticals pics. hang a mirror over the mantle.
fireplace screen is also a great idea.
i also think that double window panels as opposed to the single tie back panel would look much better. it would not only add more substance and richness but also hide the white outlets on the walls.

Re: My mantle needs help! (pics)
I would put a nice decorative screen in front of the fireplace.
You could also put a large hurricane candleholder on the floor on one side of the screen with a big candle inside.
You could put these candleholders on the mantle (maybe 2 on one side of the pic - they come in different sizes - and 1 on the other side... so it's not too uniform). They come in black and white so you could do either color or a mix of both.
Or a mantle clock on one side:
Don't clutter the mantle up too much though.
These candle sconces would be really cute on either side of the picture too:
All stuff above is from target.

These are awesome ideas! I'm going to steal them for my mantle! I love that everything is from Target too...that way you can change it up if you ever get bored without spending too much money...

I was going to say the same thing. I think they would frame the area nicely.

Re: My mantle needs help! (pics)
I was watching rate my space last night and they did a Tuscan LR. Gorgeous! Hope this helps. I love all the idea the OPs have given you already. Adding just a couple of things will really change the look.

A fireplace screen would look gorgeous there! Especially with the Tuscan theme.
For above the FP, I think sconces would look nice!
Beautiful room!

They were from Rooms-to-go. Its from the Cindy Crawford Home collection, but last I checked I didnt see it on the website anymore They *may* have discontinued it, but we just got them back in October, so you may still be able to find it.
