My New Hope, PA (and surrounding areas) review
First of all, THANK YOU for all of your help and ideas!
Dh and I had never been a B&B before. it always sounded nice, but I wasn't sure if we'd really like it or if it would be weird.
I saw a deal for the Woolverton Inn on Living Social escapes. It's a B&B in Stockton, NJ which is right near lambertville and New Hope. I chose the deal with the larger room. No weekends were available so I chose a Sunday night. i still wanted to make a weekend out of us, so we booked a Courtyard by Marriott in Langhorne for Saturday night.
We got to Langhorne with no real plan. I had found out about Murder Mystery dinner at Peddler's Village, but it was sold out. I googled "Best vegetarian in bucks county: and found a place called Blue Sage Grill about 20 min away. We actually just napped until our late reservation.
Blue Sage Vegetarian Grill in Southampton, PA was phenomenal. The food was really creative but it was totally unpretentious and the service was SO good and so friendly. I had a Mediterranean plate appetizer. It had hummus, baba ganoush, some kind of salad and falafel. it was so huge and delicious. By the time my dinner came i was so full I only ate 1/4 of it. there were SO many choices, and I think only one thing on the menu had tofu. There were no real meat substitutes, it was all about the flavor of the veggies and the dishes ranged from middle eastern to Indian, to italian, etc. The desserts were OMG to die for. I had this chocolate mousse with carmelized bananas, candied pecans, and hazelnut toffee, and DH had an ice cream sandwich made of gingerbread cookies and mascarpone gelato. SOOOOO good.
The Courtyard in Langhorne BTW was very nice. The service was great, the room was pretty large and immaculately clean. I would definitely stay there again, though there isn't much in the surrounding area except for Sesame Place (literally about 2 blocks away) and chain restaurants.
In the morning we went to mass at a local church and got breakfast at a bagel place. Thanks google maps!
Then we headed to Peddler's Village. i was expecting something like the shops at Olde Mistick Village (in Mystic, CT), but this was MUCH bigger and nicer and it has stores you would actually shop in regularly, not just tourist traps. There was a store called The Cookery which had AMAZING cookware. Like just such an awesome selection with unique items as well. I would shop there all the time. They also have your standard shopping village stuff like several unique gift shops, new age store, dog stuff store. There is a Christmas and candle store which was GREAT. i got a runner for my dresser and some really nice art glasss candleholers for my bedroom. For food there were a few pubs, but other than candied nuts we didn't eat there. You could spend DAYS at Peddler's village. it's just so nice to walk around. it's a great place to buy decorative home items and gifts.
After that we drove over to the Woolverton Inn. From the descriptions I thought it would be in the middle of nowhere, but it was actually a nice combination since it was on 300 acres of farmland, but it was about 2 minutes from the little town.
We met with Carolynn, the innkeeper. She was super nice and showed us around. We got a cheese plate and champagne with our living social deal and that was waiting for us in the fridge (We ended up asking them to pack it to take home with us, which they did, since we had so much other good food). We had tea, hot cocoa and fresh baked cookies. Our room was The Balustrade. it was actually really large. it had a 4 poster King size bed, a chase lounge, and a chair in the room by the wood burning fireplace. The bathroom was HUGE with a very large jacuzzi tub and a rain shower. Lots of windows and light and the room had a HUGE balcony with 2 chairs and a cafe table and a couch. It had a beautiful serene view of the field and the gardens below. Must be nice in the summer.
So about the Inn - The breakfast was great. We had told her I'm a vegetarian and allergic to milk and she made e a great omelette and had soy milk ready for me. The breakfast was cheddar herb raisin muffins. Different, but good. Deliicious granola with yogurt and fruit, and I had a yummy omelette and DH had a "Dutch baby" which was a baked pancake with cooked fruit. Both were delicious. Coffee was good, but nothing to write home about.
Both the Dining room and living room have fireplaces. I loved how intimate the dining room was and we sat by the window, looking over the outside porch and the grounds. In the living room there was a piano, magazines, board games, CDs to borrow to play on the in-room Bose systems, and each day's NY Times.
Our room, as I mentioned was lovely. I felt it was cold and at first i thought it was a good idea since you wouldn't want to light a fire if the heat were cranking, but the heat never did come up, and I was freezing even with the fireplace on. It wasn't extremely extremely cold, but it was colder than is comfortable. I ended up sleeping in flannels, which was not the plan
The bathroom was beautiful and immaculate. it had a lot of light. The jacuzzi wasn't that strong. We tried to figure it out but it was very gentle, not the big rolling jets I expected. They gave us "Sensual bath salts" but nothing with bubbles and there was a sign saying only to use the provided bath products. We had plenty of towels and other amenities such as soaps, lotion, makeup remover towels, etc. There were candles and matches on the side of the tub.
The fireplace used Duraflame logs so it was really easy to light, which was good for us since neither of us had even lit a gas fireplace before. It was really nice and romantic to have the firelace in the room. We also ha da nice setup with water bottles, glassware for our champagne and fresh flowers. There were diaries in which each guest had written an entry. it was so nice to read the stories of new loves as well as people coming back for their 25th anniversaries. I loved it.
Overall I liked the Inn and would go back. in fact i want to go back in the summer.
Carolynn spent time with us when we got there to help us pick a restaurant. She was really patient and directed us to the perfect place. We had dinner nearby at the Sergeantsville Inn. It was another BEAUTIFUL historic colonial inn. We ate in the library which had beautiful stone walls and a crackling fireplace. it was so perfect being there on a Sunday night because it was only us and one other couple. This place was amazing. They had something likr 40 specialty martinis on the menu, they had a vegetarian menu along with some really "intresting" things like llama meat. The portions were HUGE and the service was SOOOO friendly. We totally loved it. it was perfect.
We had a 15% off coupon for Philips fine wines in town. We went into the store which was the largest wine store I have EVER seen. We left without getting wine since I was really overwhelmed. I'm sure you can find a lot there if you are looking for a specific wine.
On Monday we went first into lambertville. Apparently most stores are closed on Mondays, so we did some window shopping. We went into a small wine store that was having tastings. 5 for $5. We actually tasted about 11 wines. They had a lot of variety including ice wines, sparkling wines and fruit wines (like apple wine served hot). We then came about The Chocolate Box, which the lady told us was not supposed to be open but she opened anyway to do post-V-day inventory. We got an amazing valentine heart box on sale and we also got individual chocolates. she let us try some and they were to DIE for.
After that we went into new hope, which I honestly didn't like as much. it seemed more commercial and touristy to me. We went into some shops there including a Christimas story and a store called "Terri's gifts" which has a HUGE collection of unique items and lots of antique and new character items such as disney, superheroes, Star trek, betty boop, etc. We actually found a beautiful, reasonably prices mezuzah there and bought it.
We had lunch at taco Loco which I really liked since it was really laid back and they had a lot of variety at low prices. We actualy got our food to go and hit the road.
Overall we had a really laid back weekend, but it was just what we needed.
let me know if you have any questions.,
Thanks again for the suggestions!
