My newest bite wound from my own dog
A while ago I had posted that Murray had some agression issues and has bitten DH & I on numerous occasions. Hes a 30 lb dog so he cant do severe damage but still.... .Also I am 5 1/2 months pregnant. So he either had to shape up or go
So we hired Mutt Manners who uses a trainig collar. The collar works wonders when it is on. We dont leave it on him overnight bc it has these 2 prongs on it and it cant be comfortable to sleep like that, plus they told us it only has to be on him during the day.
Well, this morning DH left for work and Murray was in the bathroom garbage and took a tissue out. I got out of bed and told him to leave it. (remember the collar is not on) I didnt have my glasses on so I couldnt see if he was showing me his teeth or was in agressive mode. I went to grab his collar with one hand so I can take the tissue out with the other (I hold his collar so it keeps him from biting me, our usual routine before the training collar) When I went to grab his collar, I got some of his skin, I didnt pull that hard but he must have felt threatened and turned around and bit my wrist. I amusually quick enough not to get bit but I could barely see.
So, here we go again, back at square one. Not sure if we will have the heart to ever get rid of him bc we know what the outcome is, but on the other hand I dont need him biting my child. Yet we keep on saying "ok, next time he bites, thats it....."
Its a horrible sound to hear your own dog vicisouly attack you

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
Denise, I am so sorry! You are trying so hard, you really are trying your best. Murray sounds like a bratty dog, my boy dog is like this. Can be very demanding and agressive when he wants to be.
I have a suggestion. Why not have DH put the collar on him as soon as DH gets up, so Murray is covered when you get near him?
The other thing is, I don't know if you ever tried this and it sounds so simple, but did you ever try a squirt gun? How does he react? For some reason my dogs really respond to this. I realize you would not have had your squirt gun with you in that instance, so it would not have helped there.
Also how long have you had the collar and been working on that? Maybe he needs more time w/ the collar to learn or maybe he just learned that when the collar's not on, he can revert back to his old ways. I know my neighbor's dog does that, goes back to his old ways when the collar isn't on. They know when the collar is off they are free to do what they please.
I am so sorry! I do have a trainer I would recommend to you who might have different methods if you want to give that a try.

The only thing is, its shaky grounds to walk over to Murray early inthe morning when he is sleeping to put the collar on. He is most cranky then. I think what we might end up doing is leaving the collar on him all the time , I mean he does nap with it during the day so i guess it cant be too uncomfortable. ?? I am seeing the trainer on Sunday so I am going to talk to them. But it wouldnt be a bad thing to have it on overnight because sometimes he chases the cat in the middle of the night when hes bored
We stated the trainign in Feb so it hasnt been that long. He is a PERFECT dog now except when this agression stuff happens , which now, rarely happens. We are giong to keep trying.
My fear is that I cant be on top of the dog 24/7 and when the baby is a toddler and tries to take something out of his mouth and gets bit before I have a chance to react. It canhappen so quick, what if I am folding laundry, or cooking, etc. Its just scary and sucks that I have to even go through this with my own dog! Who I feed and care for and try to give the best life too!

I can imagine, I really can.
Ok you just started the training in Feb. It's only 2 mths. I can't imagine any dog being broken of their habits within 2 mths, so yes, I do think way more time is needed. Denise, you are doing the most wonderful thing to try to work this out (I would too). They are animals, they don't know better, so sometimes they act out (just as children or adults do) but the animals don't have the same senses a human would. So I would do all the things you were doing.
I think you have a good point about the napping, hey, just leave it on him 24-7 at this point b/c he obviously needs more time to learn.
Can I ask you, does he ever play? Seem happy? Does he like to exercise, run, walk, play fetch, etc? Does he enjoy any special treats? Does anything make Murray happy or is he always cranky?

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
He usually is a happy dog. But he never wants to play ball , he was never into that or go in our backyard and run. But our backyard is boring, there is no trees or anything. When we bring him to FIL's he goes crazy in his backyard playing.
He has toys, etc that he plays with. He loves going in the car and going for walks. So I think generally, he is happy just has his cranky moments. I know there is a lack of excercise because we both work full time. We try to make the best of it by doing whatever we can after work but I know deepp down its not enough. Hopefully once I am home with the baby I can spend more time with him too. We try bringing him to the dog park but he is terrified of the other dogs. Thats something we are working on in the training too.
Oh and the water gun - we used to try that , his whole face would be dripping in water and he would still refuse to drop anything he had. He is the most stubborn animal.
I just need to face the facts that my dog has a couple of loose screws.

I am glad to hear he does appear happy much of the time. That is good! I thought he was always angry or sad. So that is good! Some dogs aren't into toys, so that doesn't surprise me.
You say he has a few screws loose. I always say that about my boy dog, I tell DH that I think the breeder must have dropped him on his head, lol. My boy can be very stubborn and angry when he wants something (but in different ways than Murray). My boy has bitten me when he is in his crazy state whenthe doorbell rings, and he is trying to get to the door. He goes bezerk but he is half the size of Murray so I grab him, while is he trying to bite me, and I remove him from the area (while going insane in my arms) then put him in my kitchen, scold him and squirt him (he does thankfully hate that). But we too have to watch when the bell rings and keep him gated away otherwise he makes sure to get what he wants (he loses control of himself in a frenzy when he wants somethng we are trying to stop him from having). And like Murray, he has growled, snapped at me occasionally when we move him...whereas my girl dog has never snapped, never bitten, and when you reprimand her she cowers down and rolls over to give belly. Very submissive, all I have to do is LOOK at her and she crouches down and turns her face away, doesn't want to look at me. And I raised them both the same way, they are both from the same breeder so sometimes it's just the personality of the dog. My boy is stubborn and will stare me down, NEVER backs down from me and never cringes when I reprimand him (other than running from teh water gun, but never will cringe, or give belly or act submissive).
Hopefully the trainer can reassure you this weekend, at least you have him coming. Let me know how it goes, PLEASE.

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
Your case sound s so familiar and I think that's why we're both best friend training customuers. Have you told your trainer, are you able to go to group class.
My dog would frequent bite those who took care of him, usually on a walk. I would give tje dog some good treats as soon as you wake up. (you have to charge the collar at some point in the day). I had to give my dog treats to put on his collar for a year. Then I would have the remote on me all the time. Training is alot of work but at the end it's all worth it.

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
Please get the bite checked out. All bites should be. If he grabs something that does not belong to him, try trading it for something of his that he values or for food. It will get you both out of a dangerous situation. Also, make sure he does not have any pain. Something may have been hurting to make him lash out.

we did bring him to the vet to have him checked out when his agression issues started. All was fine. He just has a nasty streak. There were a lot of mistakes we made when he was a puppy. If I knew then what I know now..... Oh well.
Yo really think I should get the bite checked? He has all his shots.

Yes. I had a bite, too and the doctor instilled some fear in me about what can happen when bites are not treated. I needed a tetanus shot and antibiotics. A dog's bite is like in injection. Anything he has on his teeth goes right into your body. I am so sorry to scare you but I really believe in this. I asked if your dog was hurting because my dog really does not like having his collar grabbed. He is a dachshund and their necks can be sensitive.

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
I commend you for working so hard on your dog. Did you call your trainer again? He/she should be able to help you every step along the way.
You obviously cannot have a dog like that around your child. We all support whatever you do

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
I spoke with my trainer yesterday when we went to group class. He said to leave the training collar on all the time except to charge it. So we an charge it while we are at work , he doesnt have it on then.
I wasn't a fan of the collar at first but I think with a dominant dog with these issues it can really work wonders. So I look forward to success and hopefully he can be best friends with my baby on the way.
We are also thinking of getitng him a friend to play with. We all know a tired/excercised dog is a happy dog. So maybe that will help too.

Does he get along well with other dogs, seem to enjoy their company? It definitely did wonders for our dog. We were afraid he might hurt a small pup but little did we know, he is rougher with us than he was with a 5lb pup.

Re: My newest bite wound from my own dog
smaller submissive dogs he is okay with . dominant dogs that come up to him quickly and sniff his butt scare the heck out of him. He yelps even if they sniff him. You would think he is being killed.
But he is always been ok with smaller dogs. I figure if we get a puppy, he will have plenty of time to get used to the dog once it grows to be a bigger dog.

Denise, my dogs are the same way when large dogs approach them fast or sniff their privates. My girl dog yelps so loudly, you would think the other dog bit her on the private parts.
I do think if you are up for it, that it might help him in a way. He will have a friend, they will teach each other boundaries. We were really worried that our male dog would hurt a pup since he is very bitey, and mouthy, and we thought he would be aggressive towards her since he is sort of like Murray.
But actually, my girl dog really puts him in his place and he has become submissive to her (not us though). So a pup might work out great for him, as long as you don't think it will make him jealous. We see a much better side of our male dog since we got him a friend.

Meanwhile, he really can be such a good dog
