My Pediatrcian Made Me So Worried...PT Services For My Newly ONE YEAR OLD

Chloe isn't crawling or walking YET! My DR isnt too concerned YET with that. But says she is concerned that she doesn't put weight on her feet. Just this week she is STARTNG to when I hold her. She'll feel the floor with her feet but then quickly pull her legs up. I assumed my DR would wait until 15 MOS to CHECK her out! I was suprised she looked SO concerned at her ONE YEAR OLD VISIT and is sending us for a PT Evaluation. She said it may be nothing but let the PT tell us that. Or perhaps a PT needs to work with her to strengthen her muscles. She said she should be able to be standing on her feet now.

Additionally, if this matters...she is chunky..26.4lbs and VERY chunky thighs! Any opinions ladies?

Thanks a lot!

I don't have any experience, but it sounds like you have a great proactive pediatrician.

If its nothing, its nothing... and if its something that can be helped it sounds like you have caught it early!

I bet you murphy's law will kick in, and she'll start walking on the day of your appt, hahah!

Good Luck, keep us updated!

I know it's hard to not worry, but let the PT do the eval and then take it from there. Your ped. is good to be on top of it now. She'll be fineChat Icon

DS was the same way. He wasn't walking, crawling, cruising or pulling to stand by age 1. He was also a big boy (29 lbs). I had called EI and he did qualify and they gave him PT. The fact that she can't hold her weight sounds like a muscle tone issue in her legs and PT should really be great for that. My son had low muscle tone in his torso.

DS crawled within a week after his first birthday (before services began)...about 6 weeks later he started to pull to stand...a month later he started cruising...and then right before he turned 16 months he finally started walking.

Don't be worried. It's not that uncommon. But better to be proactive and get the process started to get her any help she might need.

DD#2 was 30lbs at her one year visit with very chuncky thighs. She was crawling and pulling up on things but not close to walking. The Dr did say that her size was probably holding her a back a bit because it is alot to lift(she is very tall too) She began walking at 15 months.
I would be very happy that my Dr was proactive and staying on top of it. What if she said nothing and in 3 months time you wish she had.

An eval will not hurt in any way. I think your PED is concerned about the way your DC is standing/distributing her weight not because she is not walking yet.

The eval will let you know what is going on. If "anything" comes up it's a great idea to take care of it now and not postponne.

Hopefully it's nothing!

Thanks for responding. My DR. told me to call St Charles and gave me a script for a PT evaluation. She said NOTHING about contacting EI services as she said my daughter has no other delays. I am a bit confused. Contact EI or just St Charles?

Thanks a lot!

Something that works really well with low muscle tone is the door jumper by Graco! When I babysat, that is what PT made the little girl do! Builds muscle easy and is cheap and you can DIY!

Doctors are big on CYA these days.

My DS doc was concerned about his speach. They wanted me to go for an eval so when he was 18 mos they could see the progress.

I'm not sure what the eval would hurt? If the PT doesnt think its anythin to be concerned with - you have peace of mind. If it is something to be concerned iwth - you didn't waste 3 months.

I would bet it's her weight...really. My DD is also very chunky, almost 11 mths and 24 lbs. She JUST started bearing weight on her legs now...

Does your DD use a jumperoo? Does she bear when in that? My DD would never bear weight unless she was in there. Even if we tried to get her legs down, she would bend them and sit.

One day last week she started bearing weight and now she does it most of the tiem when stood up. I reallly think it's the extra weight that holds them back with this stuff, its a lot of weight to m ove around!!

Either way, get it checked out but I would bet it's all ok....Chat Icon

ETA- My Dds thighs are gigantic too!Chat Icon She did start crawling last week though, thought it would never happen.

If it makes you feel better my DD doesn't crawl and probably never will. The ped. isn't at all concerned about the not crawling since they don't really consider it a milestone anymore. That being said though, Emerson has been standing on her own for quite some time and trying to walk since 11 months old.

Personally, I wouldn't be too worried about Chloe at this point. She's still little and some kids don't attempt to walk for a few months after their first birthday. I think it's good your ped. is being proactive about it but I wouldn't stress too much over it. Every baby will reach their developmental milestones in their own time.......some sooner or later than others. I would keep trying to encourage her to stand, let her lean on the couch for practice and eventually she will get it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wouldn't be worried, Chels is a big baby too and when it comes to gross motor she's definitely slower bc of her weight, my ped was concerned bc she wasn't pulling herself up to sit for a while, I think your pediatrician is just being proactive!!!!!

Then she CAN do it and is just not ready to do it...keep trying to hold her up, like leaning on a couch. Show her her feet CAN touch the floor. My DD would stand fine in the exersaucer but not anywhere else...and after us trying a few times and her REALIZING, then she started!

She is Ok, I am sure, just heavier to hold herself up!Chat Icon
