Re: my son is pulling his hair out... or trying to
My friend's 2 year old son did this. He created a very large bald patch on the top/back of his head. She took him to the barber and had his head shaved big-time! She's done it a couple of times now since April and since he couldn't pull hair out, he seems to have "forgotten" about it...

My niece had this condition for a while when she was about 2-3 years old. It was brought on by stress. They were in the middle of moving and to her, her life seemed chaotic. It was called trichtotillomania.

Re: my son is pulling his hair out... or trying to
My DH and BIL are twins and BIL used to pull his hair out when DH cried/stressed him out too much. Not to make light of it, but pictures from when they're kids are actually pretty funny. DH has this big mop head and BIL has sporadic hair missing. If you're not opposed to it, I would take someone else's suggestion and cut his hair short enough that he's not able to do it.

I have read about this. It is related to OCD but that does not mean that they will do it all their lives or that anything is necessarily "wrong" with the child. It may be worth talking to a counselor or a doctor even if only for some tips in how to show the child some productive ways to handle stress (if stress triggers it).
