My son may lose his front permanent tooth..

I'm so upset.

He had a collision with another child on the playground on Friday and really cut up the inside of his mouth (to the point where he could have used a couple of stiches, but the doctor said they don't stitch inside the mouth) and hit the front of his teeth on the other boy's head. The nurse called and told me to come right away.

I thought thank God his teeth were still his mouth and not loose. He had blood everywhere - his mouth, his nose - it was a disaster. We went right to the pediatrician and after she examined him they sent us to a dentist they have right in their office (our dentist is off on Friday's). She x-rayed him and said that the roots were not fractured and that was a good sign.

Now today I took him for a follow-up with our regular pediatric dentist and after examining him he said that the root was fine but that he fractured the socket (the dentist could slightly move the tooth up and down). He said the tooth has a 50/50 chance of surviving, and only time will tell. There are so many other complications that can happen with this also.

In the meantime I have to keep my active, sports-head 8-year old calm and quiet so for the next couple of weeks so he doesn't even slightly hit the tooth again - because that will definitely do it in.Chat Icon

I was there with Maddie a few months ago. She was lucky that it was more bruising & didn't lose the tooth. I hope it makes it!

Good luck!!! I know how hard it is to keep an active 8 year old down.

Oh no! I hope his tooth can survive!

I had an accident in the school yard when I was in 3rd grade; hit the pavement face first. I had to have an emergency root canal on one tooth and they were able to save the other one.
For the next couple of weeks, although it may be hard to do, try not to let him bite to hard into anything either i.e an apple or corn on the cob.

I really hope he doesn't loose his tooth!
