My turn AGAIN to have my other son evaulated.

Well I guess it's my turn AGAIN to have my other son evaulated. Chat Icon I have twin boys that will be 3yrs in 2 weeks.
They are in nursery school 2x week from 9-11:30
The school suggested I have my son evaulated because he is not interested in participating in circle time. He does his own thing & if they pull him in, gets upset. If he starts crying, they at times have hard time calming him down. Some days he just turns it off (the crying) instantly & one would wonder how it switched so quickly. Other days, it's crazy crying where they have to take him out of the room.

We will go thru the process & am just starting paperwork now. I will go to school this week to register for CPSE. This son was dropped from early intervention in august 2013.

Do you think this could be an issue or just immature??
She said she can totally handle him so it can't be that big of problem in my opinion. (not like she asking us to leave)

Be Honest!!!!!

Is he speaking a lot? Could he just be frustrated because he can't verbalized what he'd rather do? Does he interact with his brother at home?

I taught pre-school for a long time. Did he just start? Circle time can be hit or miss for certain kids, especially if it's their first school experience.

It could be something or it could be nothing.

Honestly, getting it checked out early is never a bad thing.

DS was awful when he was younger.....now that he is in K I feel like maturity is kicking in and we aren't seeing a lot of what we saw when he was younger at all.

I agree with Morningcuppacoffee. Could be something, could be nothing.

As you know I am going through the Eval process right now. So far we have only met with the psychologist. Your son kind of sounds like he's in the middle of my twins. I have one that doesn't even go to school because he screams his head off before even entering and the other goes in no problem and is happy to be there but does not interact. Similar, sits on the outskirts at circle time, etc. He just doesn't cry if the teacher tries to bring him in. But she literally has to hold him in her lap or he's wandering or rolling on the floor or whatever.

In my case, yes he is def the less severe problem of my twins. I thought like you prob just a maturity thing (which still could be), but the psychologist said at his evaluation that he should be able to sit at circle time and should be able to do x,y,z and that he needs a little help. She recommended a speech and ot Eval and I was wondering why. She said just to have him checked. He spoke a little low with her (but she is a stranger after all!) and OT she said will help with things like concentration and fidgeting in his chair (both my kids are big on this-but again I figured it was an age thing).

It maybe nothing or maybe he just needs a little help or a little more 1 on 1 to ease him in.

Hard question to answer for sure at their age. I would go ahead with the evaluation. My son was diagnosed on the spectrum at 2 (pddnos) at age 4 his teachers/therapists didn't agree and now he's in kindergarten and the school psychologist recommended he get reevaluated. Reason I'm saying all this is I believe EI can work a great deal for a lot of kids who get it really early. If he is or wasn't I don't care in the end all the therapy he got benefited him.

Thanks ladies. No Speech issues at all. Speaks in complete sentences. My husband thinks he just testing the boundaries. I am not sure...may need alittle help. I do think he has alittle sensory issues. HATES hair washed, doesnt like loud music etc.

He is the twin that will run up to you waving saying "Hi my name is XXX" Very affectiion & jumps at the gate of classroom in am to go in.

Could be him just being a 3 year old, but it couldn't hurt to get him evaluated, just for peace of mind.

My son has been in daycare since 8 weeks so he is has been sitting for story time for a long time but the kids that are new to a school setting have issues at first. I think part of it is just learning that at circle time they sit quiet. If that is the only issue then I wouldn't stress.

Re: My turn AGAIN to have my other son evaulated.

Above poster brings up a really good point.

They need to learn the structure and routine of the school.

Even kids with issues tend to do well with both once they learn it.

Re: My turn AGAIN to have my other son evaulated.

I think it's always better to err on the side of getting them evaluated, that way you don't lose any time that they may receive services if they are eligible.

I think you should go with your gut and get him evaluated. One thing I will say is that when the pediatrician recommended I get my DS evaluated for speech at 15 months, I asked the daycare if there were things they noticed that might be delays or unusual. The teacher made a list. I was shocked and they told me if I hadn't mentioned it, they were going to talk to me soon. I think the teachers and directors of daycares and preschool are well versed in behavior, so I think if they are recommending an eval, I would do it.

So I went to my dist today to meet with CPSE to advise them what the school said & we should have my son evaluated. There response "So what are we evaluating for" "Why are you hear" I said, he doesnt want to sit, cries & shakes sometimes etc.... they responded "He is not 3 yet" We will do it anyway, but maybe he is just bored & doesnt want to sit.

My other son (twin) scored 130 on psychological & is thinking maybe Twin A might do well also. We should look into Kiddie Junction or Merrick Woods. She said very structred there.

Thanks so much Maggie Ray. So My son had his Psych & his OT today.
He scored around 118 on his psych which is above average.
O/T-- Told he needs help with fine motor skills. She also recommends a PT eval so we will go thru with that too. Behavior eval also still needs to be done but not sure of the date yet.
