Mysterious Illness in kids
saw this article this morning. What are your thoughts? Do you think we still don't know enough about Covid-19 to know the effects it has on kids or do you think people are just linking the 2 because of the Covid-19 hysteria?

Re: Mysterious Illness in kids
I am not a doctor but there is no real evidence that these symptoms are a result of Covid. Not all of the children with the symptoms even have or had Covid. It could be an entirely different virus. Maybe it's related, maybe it's not. But the media loves to fear monger so I am not worried about this at all.

Everything I've seen on the news has said specifically that they do not know for sure whether or not it is related to covid. But, there has been a sudden surge (from 15 cases to 60+ cases overnight in NY) of whatever it is and it is serious. Many of the children who have had it have also tested positive for covid antibodies without ever having had any symptoms. I think it's important for parents to know this is out there - it's not fear mongering

I don’t think it’s fear mongering at all. These things that are showing up are being reported. It is a strange disease. I kind of saw this coming. It has gotten the elderly and immune compromised first. Then it is starting to get to people in their 40s and 50s. Now it is getting the children. Scientists just don’t know how it works. It was the same way with HIV. They narrowed it down to gay men, drug users, and hemophiliacs. That is what they are doing now— trying to narrow it down.

Re: Mysterious Illness in kids
who knows at this point. but it saying only 4 tested positive for covid-19.
too early to draw a conclusion one way or another.
also the article alone states that Kawasaki disease can develop after a common cold.
Dr. Dyan Hes, a pediatrician in New York City, told CBS News last week that she was "not surprised" by the U.K. report showing a possible link between COVID-19 and Kawasaki. According to Hes, children can sometimes develop the disease after a bout with a common cold, which is caused by a different variety of bug in the coronavirus family.
Coronavirus "can become very severe" in kids, despite most showing milder symptoms She added that Kawasaki could pop up "weeks to months later" after experiencing some kind of viral infection or "multiple viral infections."
again like I stated in another thread soon everything will be considered a sign of covid!

Re: Mysterious Illness in kids
Interesting timing for sure. Researchers in San Diego (which commonly has outbreaks of Kawasaki disease) attribute it to specific weather patterns and environmental factors that result in more pollution particles in the air. I wonder if it could be a side effect from staying inside or even inhaling particles from masks. I know some people have been cutting up vacuum bags to use as disposable filters in masks. The news talked about how inhaling those particles is basically poison. People are getting very creative with what they use in their masks. Maybe it's the coffee filters. I'm sure they'll figure out the common denominator in these kids.

Mysterious Illness in kids
It seems like speculation because some of the kids I read did not have covid19, but most of them did. Very weird things going on, I have no idea what to think anymore...

Terrifying. Doctors will get a handle on things eventually. They did with AIDS, small pox, polio, flu, etc. But it didn't happen in a few weeks.
We need to give them time. This is what we are living through. We didn't choose it any more than people chose to live through wars, drafts, or other diseases.

True, but some of these side effects were always around.
In fact, it's known that kids can develop kawasaki disease after getting the flu vaccine. Things like that were not widely reported on the news, so most people went about their lives.
Now people hear that a very small number of kids are showing this symptom after *possibly* having covid and we use this to support not opening schools.
THIS is terrifying, but the flu vaccine is not? A little hypocritical, no?
(And I say this as someone who has always, and will always vaccinate.)

This virus is brand new. There is so much that scientists still need to learn about it. And that will take time. But parent's need to at least be aware of what is happening - connected to covid or not. There are SOME kids who have tested positive for antibodies, who never exhibited any symptoms who are now getting seriously ill, with heart failure being one of the possible "effects." The number is small - right now. But went from 15 cases to 60 overnight. That is a huge increase for a mystery illness. Hopefully it won't become a larger number and won't spread the way covid has, but they just don't know yet. I would think parents would at least want to know that this is out there before sending their kids off to school (eventually). And hopefully by the fall (when schools will hopefully open), there will be a better understanding of this. But IF this is something that spreads like covid and can be that harmful to kids, would you want to send your kid into a classroom, not knowing? IF the only two options were keep schools closed OR send kids back with this mysterious illness out there, what would you choose? And like I said earlier, hopefully they will have a better handle no what this is, how it is spread and how it can be contained, BEFORE schools re-open

You completely missed my point.
Kids have always had a risk of developing this after exposure to a virus, even sometimes as part of a vaccine. The concept is not new. This is a known thing that happens sometimes in conjunction with a virus. It happens to kids every single year.
Why is kawasaki disease only "terrifying" when it's associated with COVID. Why not when it's associated with the regular old flu?
Heart complications from kawasaki are also not new. And those complications are rare. Drs are well aware of it, and it will continue long after covid dies down.

The "new" syndrome is not Kawasaki. Many of the symptoms can be similar or overlap, but it is not the same disease.

the CONCEPT is the same. It's a immune response to a virus. The idea is not new.
And anyway not all of the kids even had covid, so maybe it's not even related at all.
At this rate no one will ever feel safe leaving their house again, terrified of things that were ALWAYS OUT THERE.

Mysterious Illness in kids
Kawasaki disease is a rare immune response that can occur when the immune system goes into overdrive to fight something off- a virus, bacterial infection, allergens. It's likely caused by a cytokine storm, which can almost be described an an immune system working TOO efficiently. Which would make sense here- a child's immune system, in general is more efficient than an adult's. There's actually some evidence linking cytokine storm to adult COVID deaths.
That being said, research still shows that children get COVID less frequently than adults and tend to have milder cases. This doesn't negate those findings.
It's level of "scary" has nothing to do with COVID. It's scary regardless of cause.

Re: Mysterious Illness in kids
I wonder if there is a connection between the kids who had the flu vaccine AND coronavirus antibodies with this strange disease. I was watching a "conspiracy" video that claims that the flu vaccine made more people susceptible to coronavirus. I wonder if it did the same for the children. Maybe it manifests as Kawasaki in children.
I am absolutely no means an anti vaccine person, but why get a vaccine that changes for a seasonal virus? The flu vaccine never made any sense to me and I think the coronavirus vaccine doesn't either. Coronavirus is an RNA virus (so too is HIV, btw) and there haven't been effective vaccines for RNA viruses. I think it will make people feel safer, but drugs and immunotherapies may be a better alternative.
