Nap question regarding 9.5 month old

I am having such a hard time getting DS to go down for his afternoon nap lately. He sleeps 7:30pm-7am at night and wakes up once during the night to nurse (usually around 4am). He will go down for his morning nap between 9-10am and will sleep between 2-3 hours. I try putting him down for his PM nap between 3-4pm but he REFUSES to sleep. By 5pm he is extremely tired and cranky. Could he be ready to drop down to one nap already?? The only reason I don't think so is because he is soooo tired by 5-6pm.

I've tried pushing his morning nap back until 11-12pm but he's still very tired by 5-6pm. Should I push his bedtime up to 6:30 or so? Ultimately, I'd like for him to still take an afternoon nap.

From what I read, they still need two naps at this age. I would try to wake him from the morning nap. If he takes a 3 hour morning nap, that could be why he doesn't want the afternoon one that he needs.

Re: Nap question regarding 9.5 month old

Around 9.5m, DS went through a period where he just refused to nap, he's stay in his crib and just play for the two hours. He was working on crawling, cruising, creeping, starting to babble, making new sound combinations, just a lot going on for him, and maybe he was just too excited to nap?

I was wondering the same thing, it went on and off for a couple of weeks, made me ask the same questions you are.

Just recently he went back to his usual 2 2 hour naps.

I think you can probably give him quiet time in his crib during what would be his normal nap time. Maybe give him one stuffed animal or something to hang onto for comfort. When I did this on occasion, he'd play and then he'd fall asleep sitting up, or standing up, 10 minutes before his nap should end. And I'd give him an hour to get sleep, so it didn't interfere too much with bedtime.

I try leaving him in his crib with a few toys. He used to play with them and then fall asleep but since he's learned to pull himself up in his crib, he'll do that and then scream because he doesn't know how to get down and he gets stuck.

I am going through this right now as well. MY dd is 7 1/2 months old and has had such a hard time this weekend.

She's been screaming like I have never heard before. She has not wanted to go in for a nap today.

I just read in What to expect the first year that as they reach 1 year they maybe ready to drop a nap.

Tomorrow I am not goign to give her the am nap (9/9:30ish-10:30/11:00ish) and see if she will go down around 11 for a few hours.

She was so tired tonight from not sleeping today that she went to bed at 6:30. She usually goes down by 7:30. I am praying she will sleep until 7 am.

I am also going to change up her feeding schedule.

I will also see if she needs the pm nap or just let it go, not sure about that one yet.

DS usually goes down at the same time as your DD but tonight he was so tired I had to put him down at 6:45. I feel like this is becoming a regular occurrence Chat Icon

I think I will try what Michelle suggested and wake him up from his morning nap after about an hour and a half and hope that he naps in the afternoon.

My 9 month old sleeps from 6:30pm-7:30am. She has stopped waking in the middle of the night thankfully. She naps from 9:15-10:30am and then again from 2-3:15. Hope that helps.

This sounds like a great schedule.

Her bedtime seems to have gotten earlier the past week or so. Going down at 6:30 hasn't stopped SecretTTcer's from sleeping all night and until 7:30. Maybe I will try this.

Re: Nap question regarding 9.5 month old

It could just be a phase (hopefully) but also when they drop a nap they could still need some time to actually adjust to just the one nap. So they will be super tired early, but will get use to it. What about putting him to bed earlier on the days he doesn't take the 2nd nap? Sometimes sleep begets sleep so if he goes down earlier he may actually sleep more the next day......

I find that she wakes up at 7:30am regardless of when she goes to bed. Last night we were out and she was playing at my parents' house. She went to bed at 8pm and still woke up at 7:30am.

Re: Nap question regarding 9.5 month old

Probably just a phase - esp since he started doing something new developmentally (standing in the crib). I find DD's sleep gets a little off whenever she's learning something new.
