Napping location suggestions for MIL-tricky situation

Ok, this might be a little long.

So my MIL watches DS during the year, but my mom watches him over the summer. Over this summer, my mom has had a crib for DS that he naps in 2-3 times a day. He also naps in his crib at home the same way.

Now the tricky part. Starting in 2 weeks, my MIL will be watching DS again, BUT she had shoulder surgery 2 months ago, so she cannot lift him. He is mobile by walking, and holding on to walk, so if she needs to get him on the couch, she can just push his little hiney up. Anyway, the one thing she cannot do is pick him up and put him into the pack and play they have for him to sleep in.

This poses a problem bc DS is a very light sleeper, so he can't be out in the living room on the floor sleeping. I honestly think he'll give MIL a hard time and won't want to nap. He is also mobile, so even if we put him in the spare room, I'm not sure he'll sleep in there-he'll just follow her back out of the room since he won't be in the pack and play or crib.

My thoughts were to put the mat of the pack and play on the floor in the spare room so he knows that is his sleeping spot and make sure there is NOTHING he can get. This way it will be dark and MIL can still check on him while he sleeps.

Would it be weird to get one of those play yard gates so that she can get him to sleep on the floor, but then close him into the play yard so he doesn't get out once he falls asleep?

Any other suggestions?

this is exactly what i was going to suggest - you mean the ones that are totally enclosed, like a circle or an octagon right? that plus a thin padded mattress should do the trick. make sure anything that is in his crib and home or your mom's is also in this area, like any blankets or loveys he is used to sleeping with. plus i would "practice" with him beforehand so he knows that is where he is supposed to nap.

this must be so tough for your MIL Chat Icon i hope she heals well soon!

Yes, that is what I meant-like the superyard thing. Right now he doesn't sleep with anything in his crib for naps, just his pacifier. I was planning on going over to my MIL's to do a trial run with her. I just wanted to make sure that this would be a smart solution.

I figure she could get him in it, laying down, asleep, then close it up and not worry about him getting into something.

if you are worried about safety or potential hazards, honestly i can't think of any, unless Braydon can move the yard to the wall and get at an outlet or something. can you guys set up a video monitor in the room, would that make you and your MIL feel better?

The gate sounds like a good idea.

My question is - what is he falls or gets hurt, etc and your MIL cant pick him up?
Im having back surgery in a few weeks and I cannot under any circumstances pick DS up for at least 3 weeks or I will undo the surgery. I have to have someone with me in the house if I am only with DS, its the only way.

Will she have someone to help her? I only ask for the safety of your DS. They are much more quicker and trickier once they start moving, so if you are hurt, its harder to take care of them in certain situations.

I'm going to be going over there and putting things in the outlets. She only has a couple exposed. Her house is also very small, the room is probably 8x8 and there is furniture in it. He won't have very much room to move the gate if he even figures out how to. She'll liiterally be 10-15 steps away from him, and her room doors cannot be closed bc of forced heat, so she can certainly hear him. She checks on him constantly too.

I just don't want a phone call at work telling me, he won't sleep and he's cranky every day I have him. You know? Then her feeling like he is too much to watch. Because he really isn't, he's a good boy, just wants to play, sleep and eat.

Good question, she can scoot him onto her lap with her good arm, but just can't be walking around with him in her arms constantly (like when he was an infant). She is always hovering over him, so it's not like he is going to be let loose in the house (and it is small-1 story). Plus, if he really got hurt, I will make sure she calls an ambulance (God forbid). I could also be home in 15 minutes.

My mom will also be picking him up at 2 until she can fully pick him up. So right now it will be for 3 days a week, from 8-2. He sleeps (hopefully) from 8:30 to 10/10:30 ish, eats laying on the floor, plays for a while, then goes back to sleep around 12:30/1 to 2-2:30. So she won't have much awake time with him right now until he gets a little bigger.

I def think it might work. Kaydyn can move the superyard but if it's a small space then he might not be able to move it anywhere anyway.

I would def do a trial and see if it would work for him.

My 2 suggestions: A bed and get a bed rail for the open side. This is what we use at my MILs house. THen once DS is asleep we put up the rail and put pillows and such all around him and on the floor just in case...

The flip open couch at TRU...My niece sleeps on that here alot.

At some daycare centers for the 2+ kids they have cots.
If you MIL has the room, maybe getting an inexpensive toddler bed w/a mattress.
Or, DS has a foam disney chair that folds out into a bed - about $30 at BRU/Target.
Whatever it is, I would make sure that he knows that THAT is his sleeping spot and not for play.

Try this: Toddler Cots

He'd roll off of and hurt himself if he was on a cot or a bed. He's only 10 months old. But that is a good idea for a toddler!

I'd be too nervous with pillows around him, he buries his face in them.

My MIL suggested the flip couch, I think he's still young for that. He'd just roll right out of it and think its a game. Plus she'd still need to put it in another room, and then he might just roam around the room cause he can get off of it.

I agree with the play yard. You could try one of those fold out couches with the characters on them. My ds used to nap on that sometimes they are great.
