Nassau cancels all school sports until 2021
I have mixed feelings. I wonder if Suffolk will follow.
These poor kids who were going to play their last season. Or the ones who were hoping to be recruited for college this year.
Too much time idle time now. Ugh.

Nassau cancels all school sports until 2021
I do understand that a lot had to do with scheduling since most 7-12 kids were only attending 2 days a week but expected to practice 5 days a week. It was a logistical nightmare. Plus all the new protocols. My heart just breaks for these kids. This is all some of them have.

Re: Nassau cancels all school sports until 2021
So what happens to kids who planned on playing college sports or going to college on a sports scholarship? That's it for them? Game over? Too bad, so sad?
Will they be able to try out for the colleges in some other way?

Yes and sports are a necessary outlet for some kids after school too. I anticipate a lot of gatherings after school plus a little mischief.

So not only are kids missing out on potentially 2 years of education with this hybrid and remote crap now they are missing out on their potential future in college sports or even pro sports after college? Sounds fair. Especially since the infection and death rate among YOUNG athletes is close to nil I feel horrible for these kids- missing out on graduations, proms, senior year and now possibly their future scholarships for their talents. Unreal

I feel sad for the kids - they may have an abbreviated season in January though but, it's not the same (I mean it will be a bit chilly to play soccer).
It's hard - Cuomo says yes but makes it really hard to do things.

I will say that I think this was an unwise call by Nassau county. Even Cuomo said they were okay.
However, many college sports aren’t running either.
That being said, it seems that many kids who would have received athletic scholarships still will, it’s just being done differently. Recruitment through social media and private leagues.
It does more heavily impact the socially disadvantaged though.

Makes no sense so youth sports can go in but not high school. Don’t get the logic

Those who rely on a scholarship, I heard the recruiting is being done virtually

I dont understand, my son has been playing baseball since they opened, and have played in several tournaments, including teams from NYC and Nassau. He has even been playing hockey.

I can understand no game playing between schools. Everyone is trying to cohort their students and this would just add another layer they can't control. Look at the professional baseball players. They are getting Covid left and right. I do think though they should be allowed and train for the year, so those looking for scholarships or to pursue in college can still be scouted and keep up their skills.

Yeah I would HOPE some other way of being scouted and recruited would be avaialble That really woulnd't be fair to the kids who happened to be coming up for college recruitment in the time period of everything being shut down for 2 years.

Kids who want to play in college commit long before their last year of HS. They have been scouted for years officially or unofficially.

From what I understand from reading a few things, the main reason they cancelled was because Cuomo did not give them enough time to plan how to do this. Usually they start early August with the practices and planning of games, but now they have no time which is made even more difficult as a result of not all kids being in school on the same days.
Also, someone who works in athletics at a school district implied that the reason youth sports leagues are playing but not schools is really about liability. So if there was an outbreak, Cuomo is okay with you suing the private leagues, but not with you suing the state.

A lot of the recruiting is being done virtually now. I have a family member who is a junior in high school and has been speaking with college reps over Zoom. He had to out together a reel to show of his games. Most kids that are good athletes with the potential to be recruited will have clips of their games. I guess colleges are going to have to go by those. It really stinks for these kids!

I'm glad to hear they have some other options for colleges to see them. Such a ****** situation

Nassau cancels all school sports until 2021
My one question on sports is can a kid play if he’s going to school virtually and did not choose the in person? I have friends in other states and they have to choose the in person school to play any school sports.
It makes sense to me to require that way but I’m sure parents would go nuts here.

Not surprised. I think this is going to be happening more and more as of the first few weeks of school.
I think it is the right call to cancel.

In our district you can play if you are 100% virtual. I'm thinking maybe it's since the in person kids are only going 2x a week - it's really not a huge difference...
