Need 101 on DIY bathroom remodel - new bathtub and tile surround
For those who installed their bathroom themselves from bare studs.
Did you install your bathtub against the studs then put the drywall up or did you install the drywall all the way to the floor then installed the tub?
I want to do a tile surround on the walls of the bathtub.
TIA

Re: Need 101 on DIY bathroom remodel - new bathtub and tile surround
What she said.... pretty much. You want the tub in first, since there is a lip along the wall edge. The cement backerboard goes over that, then the tile over the cementboard. This way, if there is any water leakage, it has more of a chance to go into the tub, rather than in the wall.
If the grout lines leak a bit, water gets under the tile. The backerboard should prevent the water from leaking through, but it needs somewhere to go. If it's on top of the tub lip, it will all flow back into the tub. If it goes behind the tub, that's where the water goes.

I did think we had to put the tub first. I just wanted to verify.
Did you use cement boards not the green paper drywall?

The green paper drywall is water resistant. The cement board is water proof. You always want the cement board in wet areas that are tiled. The green board is good for the rest of the bathroom, where it will be very humid, but not directly in contact with water.

Thanks! I never thought of using it on the wall (just the floor for tiles) but that makes total sense.

Waterboarding is what the government is classifying as "not torture". The boards you use for your house are Wonderboard. Wonderboard is a brand-name for cementboard.
