Need advice - DH will be gone for a few days
So my DH is leaving tomorrow morning for a trip that he has been planning for a WHILE, he is really excited to go and I am excited for him
I am just worried about how Mikayla will act about daddy not being around (he will be gone for a few nights)
I know she will ask for him in the morning and after work. What do I say? do children have a concept of time? Should I say, "daddy will be home on ____" or "daddy will be home soon"
I hope she does not get too upset, I have LOTS of fun things planned for her
Thanks, this is the FIRST time DH has been gone for more than 1 night.

I would just tell her that daddy is on a trip and will be home soon. I don't know where he's going, but ask him to call and check in every day so they can talk on the phone. She'll miss him I'm sure, but she'll be fine.

Re: Need advice - DH will be gone for a few days
And I wouldn't tell your DH this, but DD probably won't notice he's gone for the most part. I've gone away with DS and DH has stayed home. DH has gone away and left us home. And DS doesn't miss him all that much. He's perfectly happy saying hello on the phone, but it's not like he cries for him or anything like that. I lie and tell DH that DS asked for him more than he does.

My DH goes away a lot for work and DD is a such a Daddy's girl. I usually do the countdown of when he will be home during bedtime(more for me than her ). She definately misses him but their concept of time is different than ours. She will be fine.

Re: Need advice - DH will be gone for a few days
Although John is a little older than Miki and Joey is younger, DH just went away 2 weeks ago to Las Vegas with friends. John asked me every morning and every evening where daddy was. I told him Daddy went on a plane and will be home on Saturday. He cried a few times during the day but I kept him busy, he had school, then we'd go to the park or the mall or to lunch anything to keep his mind off it. Joey was easy obviously
Dh called a few times, made sure to call him after school. John got to sleep in mommys big bed, so it wasnt so bad. This is the 2nd time DH went to vegas without us, first time John was 18 months so he really didnt take notice

Re: Need advice - DH will be gone for a few days
I just went through this recently when DH went away to Cali for his brother's wedding for a week.
I had DH call all the time to talk to her, ESPECIALLY at bed time to say good night. I just kept telling her that "Daddy will be home soon". She would hear cars and go running to the door saying "Daddy coming! Daddy Coming!" Yes, it broke my heart. But her "missing him" only lasted a few seconds until she moved on to something new.
Just play every day like it's a normal day and when she asks, just tell her Daddy went away for a little bit and will be home soon.
That's all you really can do Hang in there, it's not as bad as you think

you can also get a calander with the date he's coming home marked and cross it off with her every night before bed. she might not get the passage of time, but she'll see he's getting closer to getting home every day and will give her a routine to focus on while he's gone.

Re: Need advice - DH will be gone for a few days
DH frequently travels for business and I often go through this with Claire.
Whenever she asks for him, I just say "daddy went bye-bye but he will be home soon, with lots of hugs and kisses for Clairebear". I don't know how much she gets, but she does well. When I tuck her in I tell her mommy and daddy love her very much.
