Need advice- buying a used car from a dealer
Long stroy but I am very interested in a car that is out of state, I took a day and went and saw it, no similiar car in this particular color anywhere around here. The dealership was nice-- it was a car dealer not an indpeendent shop. THey tried to tell me the price was non negotiable because thy set the prcies SOO low tro get people to come in-- I looked up the edmunds price and it was about right a little high but very little. Antyway, we made an offer and she said she didn't think it would fly that the best she thought they could do was $300 off the price. OK, fast forward to next day, she calls and says sorry the manager won't meet our price and the best they can do is $300 off the price. We never spoke again as I got wrapped up with other things. So......now after looking at a few other cars I decide I think that may be the best deal....I contact her and now she tells me the $300 off can't happen becasue they've sold a few other cars in the last two weeks so they can't discount the one I want ...huh???? Also not sure she is telling me the truth as I still see all the same models listed on their website. My DH feels like she is playing games with us and now she also mentioned a doc prep fee of $288 which she never mentinoed before either.....so how would you handle, I want the car but I HATE feeling had.....

Completely agree! A bunch of BS. I feel like no matter the dealership I walk away feeling like I got screwed. Even if I've gotten a reasonable price. I jsut bought a new car and am still cranky from the process.

Re: Need advice- buying a used car from a dealer
Everyone at a car dealership is a salesperson. Even the so-called "finance manager" is a salesperson.
If you don't feel comfortable with the price then walk away. If you are close in price then see what you can do to bargain. If they won't budge or you feel they are playing games with you, then walk away. It may mean that you'll have to do a bit more searching and spend a bit more time, but it's better than feeling uncomfortable about a purchase. You should also always ask them to give you a breakdown of what fees and other charges are involved in the purchase. Good luck! You'll get your car!

Ok, so you drove OUT OF STATE to find the exact car you like....because there is none around here...but you're going to let the little $300 get in the way?
Am I missing something?
ETA: What is this going to work out to? An extra $5.00 a month in your pmts?

They will only offer her $300 off their asking price. She didn't say what she offered to pay, but I assume there's somewhat of a gap between the two.

Agreed.
They're playing games because you came back.
Tell em to take a long walk off a short pier.

Re: Need advice- buying a used car from a dealer
Same thing happened to me when I just purchased a truck earlier this yr. They wouldn't come off the price b/c they priced it so low to get interest which I totally get in this economy. We ended up getting it anyway b/c it was still a good deal and it's what we wanted. I'd say if it's what you want and it's a reasonable price then get it, $300 overall is not that much (unless its like a $3k vehicle). I think we always need to feel like we are getting a deal but we may already be getting one.

I get that. They originally only offered $300 off the asking price.
By the time she got around to agreeing to the offer they said deal off.
So, that's an add'l $300 she'll pay from the original offer.
And she's willing to walk...from a car that is what she wants so bad to the point she drove out of state to check it out.
I'm still lost?
I'm sure it's no skin off their back because they'll get someone else to buy it at asking since the demand is there. But SHE'S going to be the one missing out on a car she wanted...for $5/mth?

Walk away.
Since you called back, they figure you must want it badly so not only are they NOT reducing the car by $300 but they are also tacking on a stupid doc prep fee of $288?
That's almost $600 more than what you should have paid. So no, forget it, call and tell them if they change their mind, they got your number but if the original deal stands w/o a doc prep fee.

Read it again. They never agreed to her offer and she never agreed to theirs. They only called her to say that her offer was too low and the best they could do was $300 off which they then later said was no good either.
I took a bus from NY to MA to look at a car that I was interested in, with the intention of purchasing it. But I was totally ready to not buy it if we couldn't come to terms.

Don't pay that doc prep fee! Check outcar buying tips ...he tells you what fees are legit and what aren't.
