Need advice..leaving a job without another lined up

I know there have been posts about this before but I could really use some advice/guidance tonight.
When you went on interviews what did you tell them? Was it frowned upon? How long did it take you to find a new job? I think tomorrow I am going to give my notice.

Not to be a downer, but a good friend of ours quit his job because he hated it (after only being there a few months). It's been many months and he is still out of work. He has his MBA and is very qualified and intelligent. The job market is just not that great and he is having trouble even getting interviews.

You are not a downer at all it is a big decision, and this is my main concern.

it took me 2 months

I think it depends on what field you are in

I had at least 2 interviews a week

Re: Need advice..leaving a job without another lined up

I recently did this and another friend just did it too-- I was out of work for about a month and a half, but I got a couple of offers-- I was holding out for the right one.. My friend-- who is a poster here-- gave her notice and has received two offers and she even has one more week left at her old job.

I think it depends on your industry-- but, if you have enough $$ to get by for a couple of months why not. I think the economy is actually good right now-- not anywhere as bad as it was 4 years ago.

For when you go on interviews-- just say that you left your old job because it was not the right fit, and you wanted to focus 100% of your time in finding the right job for you-- since it is an important career move you are looking to make.

having a higher degree and a higher position can actually make it more difficult b/c there are fewer positions out there and companies have to pay you more $.

My old boss had started the company I worked for, then sold it to a larger company for tons of $$. A few months later the new company laid him off after things slowed down due to 9/11. He had a real hard time finding something at his level....

But, if you have a mid-level position and are flexible you probably have a better chance of finding something more quickly.

Re: Need advice..leaving a job without another lined up

To me its easier to find a job when you have job. I always felt happier at the job I was currently in (like now) because I was looking and knew at some point I would find a new one.

If you are definite about leaving, just make it your mission to get a new one-go to all fairs, knock on all connections doors and really get out there.

As far at the interviews I would be honest about why you left without being too negative or detailed. Negativity reflects badly on you, just like as if you were gossiping or something. Just let them know why you left, but don't go on and on.

BEST OF LUCK!!!

If there is ANY possible way to not quit until you find another job, I'd do that.

Otherwise, if you don't have a choice and need to quit (I don't know the background here), then get out there as quickly and as frequently as you possibly can. Ask friends about openings, send out your resume, etc.

PS: as far as what to tell interviwers, that depends. Do you know what your current employer will tell them if they are called for a reference? You don't want to have conflicting stories...

Re: Need advice..leaving a job without another lined up

It is very difficult, but I have been in your situation. I had money saved and I found a job in about 2 months, but it didn't start for a few months after that because I had to go through training. I blew all my savings, which was awful and now I really could have used that money.
I know how you feel when you dread getting up and going to work every morning, and all you can think about is how long it will be until you can be back in your bed.
Just remember if you leave voluntarily, you cannot get enemployment. You also need to have a really great reason to tell future employers why you left this job.
Good luck!!

Re: Need advice..leaving a job without another lined up

I was in an awful situation. I asked my employer to pay me to leave. They did and I found a job two months later.

The moral of the story is that I probably could have left without the pay, but I was closing on my house and I was petrified.

It didn't take me long to find another job but I hustled to find one fast.
